I just got the SS tanks from Hall, very nice and shiny. But the new coolant tank does not have a bung for the water temp sender. Without modifying the tank or a lot of effort, where is the best, and easiest place to locate the sender? Does the sender need direct contact with the water?

The reason the replacement tank has no fitting is because the OEM placement in the tank was incorrect
If the water level in the tank fell below the level of the temperature sender, the sender would only be sensing air temperature and the gauge would not tell you of your coolant loss
most Panteras by now have repositioned the sender to the engine block location used on all other Ford products. You may have to lengthen the wire a little bit but the relocation is something you need to do.

Sender can also be installed in the water pump, the plug with plumber's tape in above photo. You will get similar temp readings, I have tried both locations.
I did some testing with the water temperature sensor installed in the water pump and saw lower temperature readings than having the sensor installed in the block. I am using Autometer gauges in my car, so that eliminated any gauge error and also used my laser pointed heat gun. That confirmed that the water pump location was not a good place to install the temperature sensor.
If the water pump is not the best location for the temperature sensor, where on the block did you insert the sensor?

...I agree, When the sender is installed at the Water Pump, It is reading the Cooler Coolant Just returning from the Radiator. AND, 'can' also be reading 'Cavitation'.

For a long time I had a VDO electric gauge with sender in block and a VDO mechanical gauge with sender installed in water pump at the same time. The temp variation between the two gauges was maybe 5 degrees max if any. I got rid of the electric gauge and kept the mechanical gauge.
Hey Forest, great to hear from you. Patty and I are doing fine. Still in Sacto. No grandkids (yet) but all is well. Don't see the local Pantera group much but still in contact. Hope you and Judy are happy and healthy.
