Hey guys found this site a couple weeks ago. I am the proud new owner of a 1972 pantera with a GT5 kit on it. It is a semi project car. So i go t a few questions for you guys and i dont know if im posting in the right section The seller is putting some finishing touches on it and I will be helping him with some odds and ends. We have to pull tranny out and change flywheel because it vibrates. He says the seller sent him wrong flywheel. This was a couple years ago. Car has been sitting for a couple years. He raced up at limerock a few times and was driving it regularly. Hopefully no damage to transaxle. Interior was apart and he is in the middle of lowering seats and he wanted to make up a new interior but I kind of like the original so we are putting that back in place. Car has some rust in only two places. Is this a common area and should I be worried? One area is where the ac consensus is in the back under the grill and the other is the drivers side door sill. Door sill actually has holes. Can that just be cut and replaced. Rest of car is actually very clean. Also can someone help me with vin number. Can't seem to decode it. Vin number is thpn4d03865. Thanks in advance guys. Great site

And from all my excitement forgot to post my name. My name is Billy and I live in Stamford Connecticut. This car is joining a fleet of some other toys I own. Also have a delorean,Ferrari 308, testarossa, and 72 z28. So shes going to a good home

Billy, May I be the first to welcome you to the forum! This great site is hosted by Pantera International. The rust ares you speak of is pretty common. These cars rust from the inside out. They were not dipped in Italy. Many parts are available like these B pillar jambs. Your vin will be the last four digits. You have to visit. panteraplace.com www.banzairunner.com has every link to everything Pantera. We love pic here too. There is a registry too. Find that VIN above the brake booster under the carpet. Billy ... welcome again.

I'm moving your thread to the coach forum, because questions about rust seem to be the main concern of your thread.

If you check the ownership issues forum you'll find a "sticky" regarding VIN decoding.

I hope you'll enjoy being a part of this commmunity of wonderful people, i.e. DeTomaso owners.

Hi Billy,
Welcome to the community! The link to the Banzai Runner website is great, you'll find the VIN decoder and lots of other great information there too (The '4' in your VIN is odd though, it is probably an 'M' for a '72 car)

You'll find there are other owners not too far from you there in Stamford, and you're also encouraged to travel north to Canada to join the gatherings north of the border.

If you're looking for an owner or two nearby, there's a map that some (but far from all) owners have put themselves on ...

Pantera Map Locations

We're all looking forward to photos of the new car in your stable (stable mate shots are permitted too) - work in progress pics are also encouraged, they let us share in the resto process vicariously, and you'll find plenty of experienced advice coming from folks around the world.
Great to know there's a site with such great resources and helpful people. Unfortunately if you guys have a meet anytime soon I probably can't make it with the pantera because I don't know how much work will be needed to get her running. The previous owner is very kind to let me leave her in his garage and help me work on her for about a month so at least I can start her up. I just moved into Stamford and bought a house with no garage Frowner I am trying to cut through all the red tape to get one built but town is tough. They cant understand why the garage is going to be bigger than the house. I'm trying to build a six car garage with a seventh bay for a music room. Hopefully within next few months then I can start taking pictures of progress. Feel kind of stupid doing that at a strangers house. So no photos for now. But definitely will be needing all your advice and opinions on modifying maybe weber setup or maybe fuel injection. And some other goodies. But can't wait to get started on them. Thanks again for everything. Now the only thing I can do while I do not have car is research. She will be coming home in about a month. Don't know how to post pictures but if you guys want I'll take photos of her stablemates. Just gotta let me know how to post photos. Thanks again for all your help and support and look forward to meeting some of you. Just one last question does anybody know what the 4 mans in the vin no?
Hi Billy

Welcome to the Forum. COngrats on your new acquisition. There will be some challenges ahead; however you have a lot of resources on this forum and another at the (Pantera Owners Club of America) POCA sponsored site. The address to sign up for that forum is

If you have rust in those two areas, it is very unlikely that it will be limited there. Expect to find it other locations as you get more intimate with your car. Don't get discouraged as it is all repairable.

I went to look at that car and was also puzzled by the VIN and tags. Here are some photos. I got five shots. This one is a tag about halfway up the drivers side windshield frame. You are looking at the steering column through the glass and you can see the hole for the yet to be installed passenger side dropped seat area.

This is just a guess, although the tag mentions compliance with "Federal safety and bumper standards" perhaps the cars original destination might not have been the US. The country where it was first sold may have had some rules about the VIN that required the differences Larry has pointed out; i.e. the WDB in front of the VIN and the number 4 instead of the letter M. That's a weak explanation, I'm not even convinced, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

#3866 was in Sweden at the time of Bill Van Ess' registry.

Chuck (Melton) have you seen the WDB ahead of the VIN previously?

By the serial # you have a pre L. However, the rear bumper is from an L, as is the dashboard. There are no front marker pods so that would indicate a Pre l.

I'm not really sure. There were transition cars that bore features of both.

The serial number on the drivers foot box is the only number actually stamped into the original monocoque body shell (as opposed to a riveted on tag or one tucked into the windshield molding) and would be worth trying to verify. I have never seen a plate welded over that location such as yours. There might be something worth seeing underneath.

Good luck.
