No Pantera content, but I figure one of you guys might be able to point me in the right direction anyway.

The AC compressor clutch cycles in and out about every minute on my Dodge Ram truck. The thing I can't get is the AC is not switched on and even when I turn it to heat it still does the same????

Thanks in advance for any advice.

If its a newer vehicle then it is done to keep the A/c componenets from wearing out. If you don't use the A/C every so often, the seals (I think) will dry out. Then you get leaks and a repair bill. This was done to prevent the system from damage through the winter when people rarely use the AC.

I know Ford's will turn on the A/C compressor for quick spurts to keep everything in the system in good working order. The compressor will turn on with the heat. My guess is all the manufacturer's do this now.

Sorry guys, but the correct answer is:

The A/C is used to dehumidify the air when the heat is on which helps prevent windows from fogging up, especially if it is raining. It cycles on and off because the cooling load is low in winter and the compressor does not need to run very long to charge the Evaporator core. Cycling is normal for a compressor with an orfice tube system. The Pantera uses an Expansion valve instead of an orfice tube and will run as long as the A/C is turned on, unless the Evap core gets too cold, then it will turn off for a short while.

If you want to see how well the A/C works when it rains, just take a good 60 degree rainy day sometime and unplug the compressor wire. The second stop you make while running errands, you will be wiping down all the windows in the car. Trust me, My 69 Fairlane fogs up like crazy when it rains.
