Hello, Is the oil slinger really needed? I'm in the process of replacing the timing chain and found that the engine had no oil slinger between the crank sprocket and the timing cover. I've read that the oil slinger has more to do with keeping oil from spraying onto the crank seal possibly causing leaks more than actually slinging oil around the timing chain. The oil slinger also seems to be a very-hard-to-find part. Please advise. Thanks.

Dear Ron,

All of my Cleveland engine building references include installation of an oil slinger. It is not discussed as an optional part. Although it is a part not commonly available, I would think that in the interest of a long-term leak-free engine front seal, using an oil slinger would be beneficial.

So, Derrick, since my new timing chain set is a double roller, you're saying that I wouldn't have been able to use the slinger anyway. I never compare one with the other. I'll have to do that.

I've been driving the car for 8 years without a slinger. So, I guess I'm not too worried about an oil leak, but it did bother me when I saw the step in the engine rebuild manual. I did replace the crank seal to fix an oil leak last year when I replaced the harmonic balancer. I found the area nice and dry when I took the front end off to replace the timing chain set. I think I will seal the balancer bolt when I put it back together.

Thanks for all the help! I'll sleep better tonight. Smiler

Ron
