Painted trans?

Don't use anything but polyurethane paint on a ZF. If you think polishing is hard, try taking off flaking paint.

That stuff is pretty impressive. I don't know if I would paint my transaxle with it but it really looks like chrome on the video.

After adding an oil temp sensor to our ZF and running it hard for a 400-mile trip, I can assure you the ZF cases will not exceed 200 degrees F unless you plan on running Daytona or the NASCAR circuit. With our throughtly modified engine, it took the lube nearly 3 hours at 80-100 mph to climb to 180F. degrees. Most paints will take 200F easily, with short excursions to 250F. Note that any paint covering bare metal is an insulator, so if competition is in the back of your mind, leave the cases glass-beaded.

I eventually gave up trying to polish and then the care to keep the shine even if I was successful. So, I decided to paint the ZF with Alumni Blast. I think it looks good enough for a driver.

You will never have to polish it again, and it is heat resistant up to about 200 degrees or so.


So it seems that if I want the transaxle looking like some shiny fishing lure it is going to take some old fashion elbow greese. At least I can clear it and maintain the shine.

I painted mine with the Aluma Blast as well. It got a little dirty so I took some Fantastik to clean it. Unfortunately, the trans was warm and it stained the paint. I had to pull the trans this winter to replace the clutch anyway(see my other posts!)so I repainted it. Hopefully it goes back in this weekend.

I thought the ZF was magnesium?
I have seen this product before. They also sell a system that sprays a series of chemicals onto whatever you want chromed, its almost like a wash to see it applied. The results are incredible.
Here a link to the specifics for that spray chrome.
