Personalized plates for sale

Jan, I would be very very surprised if this is even possible with a California license plate. Before you start entertaining discussions on a sale I think you should look into DMV rules and regulations.

Looks like it wouldn't be a problem. The plate owner "owns" the plates and can retain them. He can then also release interest in them so a new owner can assign them to his vehicle.

Yeah, I got lazy and was running out the door in my busy retirement, but wanted to post something since it has been on my "to do" list for a while. My research with google and the CA DMV was saying it could be done, but the DMV form link was preventing issues in accessing it. I will probably stop by the AAA DMV and chat with them about the actual process. In a couple months my plate fees come due, so if no interest, I may just let them go.

FWIW, some states allow the use of historical plates, even from other jurisdictions. This is true in Wisconsin (and IIRC NY too).

Historical can be interpreted in different ways, ie. it's an Italian car, so an Italian plate is historically accurate, or it was my Grandpa's plate, so it's historic to ME, or...

If these were blue plates, I'd be interested! I've been trying to find a way to get California blue plates on my car for a while now.
