The driving season is just about finished here in N/W illinois so i decided to pull my engine and begin my engine work. Part of the plan is to repaint the engine compartment which means cleaning off all the old sagging undercoating. So i decided rather than just move the condensor out of the way of the engine i would go ahead and remove it and recharge the A/C system in the spring when im finished. What i don't know is if the freon is R-12 or R-134? I looked back through records from the previous owner and found he had the pump replaced with a rotory from Hall in sept of 1997. All the hoses still look as new. Is there a way to tell easily if i am running R-12 or R-134?
Thanks,
Toby

I may be out to lunch, but I believe the charging fittings are different sizes.

P.S. Quite the undertaking stripping the undercoating. I was lucky. Mine chipped off easily with a paint scraper. Painting is another chore. Lots of nooks and crannies to clean and all sorts of curves to paint around. But well worth the effort. Don't forget to look at all those items recommended to be completed when the engine is out.
Toby,

answering your original question re: identifying which refrigerant your system is filled with, if your system was converted to R134 the person making the swap should have placed a warning decal stating so somewhere on the vehicle, the service ports should have been changed to R134 specific fittings and to allow the system to function optimally the expansion valve should have been swapped out. I know thats a lot of "should haves", nothing definite.

Check the compressor for the service ports (fittings).

Husker, Any advice you can share would be greatly appreciated, thank you. I was just getting ready to pull the engine and gearbox yesterday when i realized my hoist boom is not long enough. So i ran it over to my local welding shop and had the legs and boom extended 12". On the R-12 subject, I have not found any recharge ports yet. I will continue looking.

Thanks, Toby
"I have made a small list of things to do while the engine is out. Has anyone ever written an article or list of things to look at? I hate to miss something."

A couple of years ago, Bruce Nardoci created a "Maintenance Checklist". Sorry that I do not have a link for it. Maybe someone here or on the deTomaso list can guide you to it.

Also, check Mike Dailey's website:

Ok, well i found a little decal on the A/C pump saying R-12. So it looks like i need to get my hands on some cans. I read somewhere it takes about 3lbs to refill the system.

I pulled the engine and disassembled today. The clutch was pretty worn and the throwout bearing was shot. The pilot bearing looked good, but i think it best to replace anyway. My engine was stroked and is EFI. So i plan on doing some porting along with alloy heads.

Jim, Do you have your list available? Could you email it to me? toby7777@aol.com Thanks.

AJ, Where do you live? If you need any help with the engine removal I am available anytime. I also have the now lengthened hoist if you need it.
