I would like to thrown out the first pitch. To those of you who have driven your Panteras on any racing circuit, what brand of tire works the best for you? I have run on Goodyear and Hoosier slicks, but never Avon or any other brands. I am getting ready to purchase new tires and would appreciate any opinions from other pilotos. Thank you and a special thanks to Matt M for undertaking this new and needed Forum. Dave

I'm running mostly HPDEs and I'm using Michelin Pilot Sports, 245/40-17s and 335/35-17s. I drive to my events and don't trailer the car so I don't change tires there. I'll start at 40-42lbs all around. I'd like to switch to Hoosiers but I haven't figured out a way to carry 4 wheels and a jack in my car. I might get one of those little trailers some people carry their wheels on and carry a different set for racing. I like to hear if anyone has an opinion on using their stock Campy 15"s ( 10"s and 8"s)or aftermarket 17" wheels many of our vendors sell. I have stock sized rotors so I can run my 15"s. Those magnesium Camps seem so light. Is anyome using them and what sizes and types of tires do you run. I'm talking about R compound tires or slicks.
Hey Mark, How fresh are the Hoosiers and are they the auto cross or road race compound? Thanks, Vince
The other numbers on the tires are as follows
871X 3103

Hoosier Racing tires / Not for Highway use
Treadware 040
traction C

Temparatue A

The tires are located in Las vegas, if your in the southern cali area I may be willing to meet at the IN and OUT burger in Victorville

Hi Dave:

Not too long ago – for purely aesthetic reasons – I seriously considered flaring my Pantera racecar to give it the Group 4 look.

After checking around on the Internet and not finding any tire sources I got in touch with Dick Lasselle, the owner of that famous factory Group 4 racer that he vintage races on the east coast. Dick said the only tires available to him were Goodyear or Avon vintage CanAm slicks that had been hand-grooved and cost about $1,600/set. That was the end of my car-flaring idea and, far as I’ve found, the only current option for Whiplash if you want to continue on the stock wheels.

Here are the tires I use for my stock body racecar:

VINTAGE RACING (treaded tires)
Hoosier R3S04 DOT radial racing tires (believe me, these are worthless on the street)
Front: P225/50ZR15
Rear: P275/50ZR15 (puny but the largest 15s they make)
Cost about $1,000.00/set

OPEN TRACK/CLUB RACING (slicks):
Front: 23x9x15 Goodyear Eagle G-19 Sports Car Special 807-409-104 (1873 compound)
Rear: 26.5x10x15 Goodyear Eagle G-19 Asphalt Special 813-249-058 (2372 compound)
Cost about $600.00/set

Note that these will only work on cars without larger aftermarket brakes.

For Hoosiers of all sizes I’d suggest you consult with Vance at the Tire Rack at (888) 541-1777 Ext. 314.

Mad Dawg Antenucci says he likes Goodyear GS-CS racing radials that come in 16/17 sizes in Panteras' widths.

For Goodyear slicks talk to Vaclav at Carroll Shelby Enterprises for Goodyear racing tires at (310) 538-1815.

For hand-grooved tires call Roger Kraus Racing if you don’t want to follow Goran Malmberg’s DIY instructions in the (I think) Winter ’04 issue of the PI Magazine. Kraus can also sell you Goodyear or Avon tires but I'm told that Avons are only sporadically available here.

PS: THANKS FOR OUR NEW RACING FORUM!
Hi Josh:

Lucky for us a lot of Vipers and Porsches use those same 17s and 18s so there are a number of tire options. None of them are too cheap, though...

Call those guys noted in my prior post - Vance at the Tire Rack and Vaclav (pronounced "Vas-Lav") at Carroll Shelby. They're both really good guys and very helpful.

Let me know if that doesn't help.
