Rear Axle Nut Removals - Which Way?

Read somewhere the driver side is lefthand thread and the passenger side righthand thread.

Both of mine are right hand thread and since my drives side has had a tendancy to loosen, I wondered if someone had changed the drivers side and used the wrong one. (I have only had the car a few months)I feel better knowing that is not the case and I just need to tigheten the s*** out of it - Thanks.

Just use Locktite RED on the threads and install the nut in a normal manor.
It will not loosen up.
The draw back is you will need to use "heat" the next time you need to remove it.

There is a left-hand and right-hand threaded axle nut. From the Pantera parts catalog:

18 Nut RH Axle 01212A
18 Nut LH Axle 01213A

to go with the

7 Rear Axle Shaft RH Stamped "D" 01200A
7 Rear Axle Shaft LH Stamped "S" 01201A

I believe that:
"D" = Destra = Right
"S" = Sinistra = Left

That's very interesting. Both sides on my car are RH.
I don't know how that came to be? Is there a variation according to mfg date?

Although I now know that the Loctite is more then enough to keep the nut in place, I removed the front knuckles and drilled them for a cotter pin and castle nut.

I guess I now have to ask whether we're talking about front or rear axles. Given the mention of impact gun, I assumed we're talking about the rear axles. Regardless, front axles also use RH and LH threaded nuts. Early spindles have one-time-use nuts that are swedged to stay in place after proper adjustment. I also drilled my front spindles for castle nuts and cotter pins.

OK. That's what I thought. Then my original reply is valid. Therefore, the drivers axle SHOULD be LH thread and the passenger side RH thread given the relative rotation of the axles; someone might want to do a sanity check on that. Those axle nuts are one-time-use and torqued to somewhere around 350 ft lbs!

Tx for the replies........ Taking off with the impact should be easy....may need to beef-up the torque wrench set for the 350 to go back on....

I just did front bearings on my Contour. I broke a 1/2" drive 24" Craftsman power wrench taking off the nut.
You may want to use 3/4 drive on the Pantera. You are going to need to use a pipe extension on the power wrench to get into the 350lbs-ft range.
The problem with the air tool wrenches is that you never know for sure what torque the thing is making.
If you use a regular axle nut and Loctite red you won't need to use a Saturn booster rocket to tighten it.

Took them off using the "socket" I purchased from PanteraEast (a fine piece I might add), with no problem. I will say, considering my impact gun is rated@600lbs, that nut WAS on there with plenty of torque.
