Hello, it's raining here in nocal so I thought i'd tackle replacing my rear brakes. The pads I bought are porterfield street compounds. On the backside of 2 of the pads there is a small round "pin" protruding. I assumed that this was something to do with the e-brake mechanism and installed this pad on the piston side. This doesn't look right as the pin keeps the pad from being flush on the piston. Do I have the wrong pads?

It is not the shape that is important, but the location of the pin/tab. If the pin on your pads is in the same location as the tab in the photo, you are good to go. Can you rotate the piston to line up with the pin? The purpose for this pin/tab is to keep the piston from rotating.
It seems as if the pin on stock rear brake pads is not often needed to keep the rear piston from rotating, except under extreme conditions. And anyone driving that hard with those toy brakes in back probably will have other problems as well. The rear piston-rotation only involves the caliper's self-adjusting feature, not the brake's stopping strength, so most cars should be OK.
brakes are done. After correctly positioning the brake pistons the car stops straight and the e-brake works great.I did have to grind the pins on the back of the porterfield pads so the pads would sit flush on the pistons. I dont know if this is a problem specific to my application or not. Thanks to everyone for the info.
