ZONKEY (#1549, early '71)was rear-ended a few years ago and was fixed with a Wilkinson rear end panel. The final result was quite good but I don't know what the body shop had to do to get it that way. I do know that the body was not symmetrical from the factory, as I am the original owner. The the rear wheel openings at the top of the rear tires showed a relative offset of the tires to the sheet metal that was about an inch different side to side.
Doug is correct. I've measured as much as 4" of offset in the placement of the license plate indentation relative to the left tail light, on some unmolested pre-Ls. There may be a vertical variance, too.
