The hose connecting the evaporator under the dashboard, to the compressor is the low pressure (suction) side of the compressor. The compressor discharges (high pressure) to the condenser, in the back of the car.
Its safer to describe it that way than to say the upper is one, lower is the other, because the head on your compressor may not be "clocked" the same as mine, make sense? You should also find the letters S and D cast into the compressor head next to the hose connections, indicating "suction" and "discharge" respectively.
