relay on trans cover?

Just finished my 2300 mile journey from LA to Louisville KY in my new '73. During extensive clean up this morning, I noticed two wires that attach to a relay or switch on the trans shift cover. These were disconnected. What is their purpose? Should they remain disconnected. Thanks for answering what will be the first of many questions.
