So 4072 has been stripped to the bare metal and is currently getting primed. The question i have for the group is around the gas tank. When I took the tank out she was sitting on some foam on the rail and strapped to the side of the inner wall. Is there a better way to have the gas tank sit on the rail instead of foam? is that standard oem protocol? Any insite would be appreciated before i reinstall. We have time as I am planning to get the tank cleaned, stripped and painted. Thanks!

Mine was like that.

One other thing that I noted was that it looked like Trunk / Decklid Weatherstripping pieces were along the seams of the vehicle in the rear of the tank. I was able to cut replacement pieces from the weatehrstrip I removed with my decklid. I put the weatherstripping on the upper, lower and bulkhead side seams. It fit really good.

I used some gasoline resistant foam and basically duplicated what I found when I pulled the tank off. I also put a thin strip of foam alond the back firewall, but that was because the tank was now contacting my SS bulkhead cover.

The big chunks of foam that were on the back side of the tank were in good shape, so I just reused those.

Good Luck - But any good suggestions are too late for me, my tank and my engine are back in....... and I don't plan to pull 'em back out!

Check page two of my thread... Here's a link.

Rocky
Canada 4072;
In the restoration process myself and just installed my tank. I used a rubberized material that was advertised as resisting oil, water and other contaminants. I wanted to be sure that the material wouldn't absorb water and have the tank sit in moisture. Possibly a local body shop or custom shop may have something since very little material is used. I got mine from a restoration shop.

The deteriorated broken down foam is stock. I used some butyl rubber from my local Orchard Suppy Hardware that's oil and fuel resistant, and more dense than the original foam.
