Lloyd,
I've read all the 'reverse' and 'grinding' problems and still can't figure my problem out; so pls HELP!!! I've got a '70 goose that shows 9,000 miles, just bought it; but I think it has more; anyway the ZF shifts perfectly in all gears; going up or down; whether the engine is running or not, I can put it in any gear, except reverse. the lever rests in the middle of the gate between second and third so it appears to be adjusted right and there is no slop. One out of ten times it will go into reverse like it should;sometimes engine running and sometimes not,the other 9 times it won't. I even tried putting it into first and second and letting out the clutch a little to move the car; still no reverse. My general plan to get it into reverse is to push the lever lightly into the reverse slot as far as possible (about one inch from the stop) and slowly let out the clutch, the lever moves 1/2 inch more into the slot and the car starts to move back, then with a little more clutch let out the movement stops and it starts to grind; most of the time I can push harder and it will go in; like an unsynchro'ed first gear, but sometimes I have to try all over again; I hate to grind the gears!!! If the car really has 9000 miles could one of the 3 gears that have to line up be 'gunked' up? requiring disassembly? I'm a fair mechanic; what can I do? I've changed the oil in the ZF and changed the slave cyl that was leaking; ps: the clutch takes up in the last inch or two at the top of the travel. thanks in advance.
