reverse lamp switch - housing question

I'm in need of a replacement reverse lamp switch. It appears that there may be a nut on the inside of the cover plate. Can the cover plate be removed without causing other problems or having parts fall out?

Am I having a senior moment, or is the nut supposed to be on the outside? The case is threaded, and the nut is the locknut, so you can adjust it from the outside. -Steve
