Great article this month!

Uh, this is a little lacking in details, isn't it? Confused

Except for how cheap it is to buy a basic Pantera. Rather pales in comparison to how well R&T used to do the "Salon" feature years back—both editorially and photographically. Still, it's nice to see the Pantera getting ANY attention from mainstream magazines.

I agree. I mean, I don't love over-paying but I looked HARD and found what I thought was a flat-out 'buy' at low $30's for a one owner, rust-free car, even though it had been sitting for 23 years. Though NOT recoverable today, I've got an additional $15-$20k in 'freshening' on the car.

Probably not the smartest investment I've ever made but the car is such a blast, it almost doesn't matter. Would I have been better off money-wise getting a done car? No doubt, but there goes half the fun.

I think the 'real' money on the so-described 'good, clean Panteras' which is to me a #3+ car is mid-$30's and up. The article put a near 40% premium on a GTS, which would not be my take on the premium, relegating it to perhaps 15% on a "like-kind" car.

I've spoken to people who've paid WAY upper $40's for ready-to-go, no-stories, no rust Panteras (more stock than not, since that's 'my' interest as well). My friend Pat Mical says he's got a couple clients willing to pay $50k for the 'right' unmolested car.

Weird to say, but I still think that's a bargain.

Hate to nitpick, because overall the article was good (not terribly detailed as mentioned) for the car's recognition.
Numerous photos of stock, narrow bodied cars. No GTS, no GT4, no GT5. Kinda of lasy research for R&T. I've been a subscriber since the late '60s and have never been more disappointed with a Salon feature. Guess it hits too close to home!
I was VERY surprised at Dave Adlers quoted opinion that nice cars are in the $25-30,000 range. I think that price is about 10 years and 10 grand off. I can't imagine he was quoted correctly. Cars on E-Bay regularly bring much more than this and PI very seldom offers cars in this range...and they are never "nice". When my insurance company asked for evidence that my car was worth much more than it was currently insured for, I had no problem providing them with eight or ten examples of narrow bodies that sold for $35-40,000 on E-Bay in a period of just a few weeks. I consider E-Bay a bargain basement indicator of current value.
It was a big thrill to turn the page and see that article. It was a let-down to see the cars grossly undervalued once again.
"I tell ya...I don't get no respect!"

That probably was a quote from ten years ago. They probably ran across an old issue of PI quarterly and said "Hey, good enough!"
Thanks, duz185, I think Motor Trend has it right. Those are broad ranges but seem to be accurate from what I've seen.
Wow...$900 for parts to replace mufflers? I'm in the wrong business!
DeTom may be on to something. I'll bet Mr. Adler's quote was sourced from another article without considering the current value trend...UP! Dave ought to write them himself, since he was quoted, and let them know what he thinks now. If any of you guys in CA talk to him regularly, please bring this up. Encourage him to set the record straight.
Mooso.
This is a response from Dave Adler regarding the road & track article. Dave is aparently having problems logging onto the Forums and he asked me to post this on his behalf....George

Dear Members,

I haven't seen the R&T article yet. I sat down for an interview in between 2002 and 2004 I believe, with the author, Mr. John Lamm (probably one of the best automotive photojournalists, in my view). The article was to have appeared shortly thereafter. Sadly, the article was delayed repeatedly and I frankly gave up hope that it would ever be printed.

Around a year ago, or longer, Mr. John Lamm visited PI Motorsports and took some photos of our showroom and some cars. I also referred Mr. Lamm to Mr. Rand to photograph his amazing car. I never saw the text of the interview I gave prior to publication. As we all know, to find a car in the price range quoted in the feature, is very difficult, if not impossible, in the condition described.

I think it is ironic that after all the years of some folks roasting me for being responsible for the high price of Panteras, that I am now being cast as the spear carrier for sub-prime priced Panteras. Although flattering, I don't think that owners have anything to fear about the prices of their cars imploding due to my outdated remarks. I am just happy that the long overdue article has finally been published and I am glad that George Pence will now be the person quoted in future articles.

Respectfully, Dave

What a strange comment. Does he really mean that he is "glad that George Pence WILL be the person quoted in future articles" ? Personally, I'd be happy if George was the person quoted. More of an outsider / insider point of view than a vendor.
I don't hold Mr. Adler responsible for inflating prices. I have always felt that buying a car from him would be well worth any premium charged because you would get expert "sorting out" and the straight scoop on condition and quality. Buying a car from a distance can be a real crap shoot as I found out when I bought mine. I would have no reservations in buying one of PIs offerings.
While the basic history won't change, a current quote of value will change, over a period of years. As journalists, they should have updated this info before publishing. A Ferrari Lusso has gone up $100,000 in the last 5 years. I'm sure they wouldn't have missed that one!

There was a typo, Dave wrote and asked me to change the "t" found in the last sentence in the word "not" to a "w" making the word read "now" instead of "not".

Dave meant to show support for me, to say he's glad I'll be the leader providing quotes in the future. I knew it was something like that. My relationship with Dave is solid, I love the man and I know he and Linda love me.
