I just got the engine and transaxle back in my 1974 Pantera. It drove fine for a few miles, then when I went to shift I could not get it to go into any gear. I stopped the car, and it still would not go into any gear. I shut off the motor with no change. I then got out and looked at the engine compartment. Then I got back in the car and I could move the gearshift into all positions. I started the car and drove home with no problems. Any ideas?

The shift lever needs to be adjusted/syncronized, with the transaxle.
You are probobly feeling the lever in neutral in the cabin but it isn't in neutral in the transmission.
It doesn't take much at all to make this happen.
Mine did it to reverse, locking out reverse, just sitting there.
Follow the instructions in the manual and it should be ok, but don't be surprized if you have to do it a couple of times to get it right.
If one can't engauge any gear with the engine not running, it isn't the clutch or anything associated with it.
It is the neutral gate. The tranny is hung up in between gears.
Reverse is the worst but the 2-3 isn't much better.

It can also be that the shift "clamp" is so loose that it is sliding on the splines of the shaft.
Same difference-stuck in the neutral gate.
OK, the details. The flywheel was resurfaced, the clutch disc was relined, the pressure plate rebuilt, and a new throwout bearing installed while the engine was out. The clutch master and slave cylinders were replaced with new ones of the stock style. The car has been driven about 10 miles on the local streets, with a 35 MPH speed limit and lots of stop signs. The transmission shifting has always worked fine until this one incident, when I could not get the shift lever to move into any of the shift gate slots all the way and get the car to go into any gear. Nothing was done to it and it started working fine about 2 minutes later and I drove it home with no problems.
In order to do the clutch work, flywheel, disc, cover, throwout bearing, the transmission was removed from the car.

In order to remove the transmission, the shift rod was disconnected from the transmission shift rod input shaft.

That connection is what is causing this problem.
Don't panic. It just needs to be readjusted and probably the connectors tightened.

The shop manual procedure works pretty well. Just follow the instructions.

Anybody can do it right DT?
