I just installed the new engine, clutch,pp, throwout bearing etc. When it came apart they're were shims around the top of the bellhousing? This is the problem. With your foot depressing the clutch it won't let you put it in gear it grinds. But if you put it in gear, then start it with your foot on the clutch, it will let out ok and let the car move foward or reverse. I haven't driven it yet, and it hasent run in 26 years. Should the shims be reinstalled or does it need to be driven to loosen everything up?? HELP!

I've decided to leave the shims out. I moved the arm closer to the slave cyl, as suggested from an old post. That helped alot, I still have to pump the clutch a few times before It will go into gear without grinding. I think I still need a little more out of the clutch though.
It seems that after the trans sat for 26 years I think the internal gears were rough and sticky, I had to put it in 1st and let it idle with the clutch depressed for about ten minutes, before the small noise went away. It goes into gear pretty well now. I also suggest keeping the adjustment rod as short as possible, and adjust the clutch master cyl out pretty far too! Well off to bleed the cooling system now.
In the marine industry we put shims on the bellhousing to properly align the input shaft of the transmission to the crank centerline. The car might have had an alignment issue or maybe someone just took the time to make it perfect. I cant imagine removing them will make much of a difference as you typically dont see them on autos. They might however improve bearing and seal life if they were acurately measured and installed.

This is precisely what I was referring to. On the type of marine applications I was referring to the engine\trans see many hours of prolonged running at cruise rpm's so I suppose this is why you wounld see it more there. Though lessened the problem would still be there in an automotive situation. Given enough time abnormal wear could certainly occur. Funny I didnt align my car when I built it. Something about the shoemakers children comes to mind.
