My 72 Pantera has a slow start problem, at times. Sometimes, it will crank over just fine. Other times, it will just barley turn over, like the timimg is too far advanced. I just checked it today, and I am at 12 degrees. I stopped for gas, and it would just barley turn over. I stopped again, 15 minutes later, and it cranked right over. I got home and checked the amp draw, and it was 201 amps, but it spun right over. What is excessive? I have checked all connections at the battery, starter relay and the starter. Also the ground connections. Could it possibly be bad bearings in the starter that lets it spin fine sometimes, and hardly at all other times? Should I pull the starter and take it to a parts store for testing?

Thanks,

You say you checked all the ground connections, but do you still have that old braided steel coming off the transmission to the frame? Those things suck. They can look fine and be corroded all to hell. One test I've seen, flex that braided steel, see if white powder falls out. Even if it doesn't. If the braid is old, just replace it with fresh ground material.

How old is the starter? They are cheap to replace, and well worth it.
Since it is intermittant high amp side of that circuit, I would look at the solenoid. Wire connections can be perfect on the outside but the points internally can be starting to fry, that would give normal starting one time when contact is made on the good spot of the point and high amps when it hits the burned spot of the disc. Just a thought.

My suggestion would be to CLEAN all the connections, especially the grounds. - battery connections, starter connections, ground from the ZF to the body and the ground up under the dash on the drivers side.
I had a similar problem - ocassionally would be slow to start "when hot". It acted like a weak battery but it always started. It happened before I had the engine rebuilt and after. I did all the above and checked the starter when it was out for the rebuild. I ended up replacing the starter with a hi torque starter and fixed my problem.
