Hello all, I have a 74 (s/n 6807) which unbelievably still possess original radiator and fans (and runs cool ?????) .  However, one of the fans, which I think is same/similar to an MGB I used to own, has become very noisy and is undoubtedly weak.  I suspect worn-out bearings.

Any recommendations on best drop-in replacement that does not require modifications to shrouds, brackets etc ?. The car runs cool so I don’t feel the need for an exotic upgrade to 2000 cfm etc ?  However, I'm guessing that I could improve the stock unit while I'm at it which I think is only about 300 cfm ?  Many thanks, Tony

...I Recommend the Largest 1 or 2 fans that can be fitted as a 'Sucker' (Laid-Down Radiator). In Your Case they would be 'Pushers'. Be sure to have a Shroud on Each Fan!! The 'Serpentine' Blades Are More Efficient as they move more air...And that Design of Blade is More Quite! The Blades and Shrouds, should be positioned with-in 1/2" Of the Radiator!

Do NOT Skimp on the CFM! Go for Maximum Cooling! When it's 100F + Degrees outside...You'll be Most Happy! Make sure the Coolant System is Up!

I believe your right, the original fan are about 300 CFMs. The Meriah Fans push about 4 times that, 1200CFMs. I've two pusher Meriah Fans on My Car for years!

If you do decide to go with the Meriah option (which my car has, and I have had excellent cooling performance with…), I have a couple suggestions….

1) Mount the fans as close to the radiator as you can without the blades & outer ring touching the radiator fins…

2) Ensure the fan body is properly aligned to the flat on the motor shaft, and use locktite on the set screw holding the fan blade to the motor shaft.

3) Buy a set of the longest Allen wrenches you can find that fit the mounting set screw.  If (in 3-10 years) the setscrew loosens, and the blades touch the radiator fins, it makes a lot of noise.  You can’t tighten the setscrew in place with a “regular length” Allen wrench.  You want these in your tool bag in the car, because it can happen on the road…  in a hot parking lot…

The Hall Fans also come with diodes (or at least mine did, 20 years ago) to prevent engine run-on due to the fans acting as a generator.

You may want to consider if you need these or not.

Now’s a great time to check (and possibly upgrade, or at least clean up) all your fan wiring connections, and grounds.

FWIW, It took me a while to finally figure out what fans someone adapted to my Pantera before I owned it. Seems the fans were used on Mercedes W123 W107 W126 and blow a lot of air. The second fan rarely turns on unless I'm stop-and-go in a line of cars on a blazing hot and humid day, and then the temp sensor turns it on for just a minute or two.

@rocky I think I wrote something in that regard… “

While I’m there I should…. “The can of worms”

the thread that keeps on giving….🤪

and as MJ said…” There’s always room for improvement” Considering that the original fans are harder and harder to come by And they are 50 years old. It might be time to open the can of worms..

Hi Tony,

I have Cool Cat fan motors on my Pantera. See the link below for more information.  The Cool Cat motors are a direct drop-in replacement for the original Lucas motors (exact same dimensions), however they have open vent holes in the back of the motor, so are unsuitable if you drive in the rain.  I didn't realize this when I put them on my car in 2005 or 2006, but it hasn't been a problem for me since I don't drive my Pantera in the rain - if I can help it.

Also, the Cool Cat website only lists the motors with mounting bracket and fans, but I emailed them and they sold me just the motors without their bracket or fan blades.
