Noticed my right angle drive is seeping gear oil. Large nut threaded to the ZF case is "loose" as is the angle drive that threads into it. Tightened them up but they seem to loosen back up with some running. Should these be tight to the case and should they have thread sealant on them to seal the joints. Roy Butfoy rebuilt this box 18 years ago and have ever have had this problem before? Any help or thoughts would be most appreciated.

Can someone confirm that the speedo right angle drive assy can be removed from the ZF case by unthreading the large nut threaded to the gearbox without any disasterous consequences (like something falling inside the gearbox)

I want to seal the threads on this nut as well as the actual 90 degree drive that threads into it as gear oil is weep out at the thread when the car is driven.

Any help clarifying this would be greatly appreciated as I don't want to just start unthreading things. If someone can also confirm what the drive adapter connects with inside the ZF - that would be great.

thanks

Lee
This is one of those urban myth's.

The Speedo right angle drive unit can easily be removed by undoing the large nut that surrounds it. The nut you must not undo is the one below the angle drive unit.

Inside the drive unit is much the same as the cable end, with a pin drive. If I recall correctly the nut is a litle finicky as it threads on the angle drive unit as well as the casing, hence you have to start it with the right amount of thread showing or it tightens on the ZF casing before clamping the angle drive.

Good luck
Patt: I replaced my angle drive a couple of months ago because of a broken fork in the drive itself. The above post is correct about the bolt below the angle drive having to be removed before the shaft that drives the angle drive might fall into the transaxle. Your problem with oil seeping from around the angle drive nut is strange. I'm no expert but maybe there is seal (O ring) around the shaft that drives the angle drive. I also believe that the angle drive nut must be tight once the angle of the speedometer cable is established. When I took my broken angle drive off, it was loose, but there was no oil leaking from around the nut. Hope this helps....Pappy
Yes mine is loose and I was thinking it just need tightening .. thats not a simple chore either because of the trans mount on my 79 .. but nothing a crows foot and a torque wrench cant cure. But yes I checked the fluid and it was not low ..but a little metalic ... I still have the jar for a friend to anylize ..but it maybe time to send it out for a rebuild..the ironic thing is the car only has 42 km on it not much milage.
