My speedometer cable (1973 L) frayed at the ZF connector. The male (one inch long square piece)came apart from the rest of the cable.

Is this a do it yourself? It looks like it routes through some complicated parts of the car. Can I attach a new one (vendor please) to the old one and and pull/snake the new one into place?

Advise/pictures please.
THANKS,
Tom

Its not too complicated. Even I managed to replace mine. Most vendors should have it in stock.

You will need to change the whole thing. From speedometer to ZF. There should be a few posts here showing you exactly how to do it.

It gets old, gets hung up somewhere inside the cable and that's why it unravels and ends up frayed at the end.

If not available from vendors, you can have one made easily enough. I had a custom sized cable made by "speedometerplus" (email below). But you will need to send them perfect dimensions and detailed pics.

Start by unhooking it at the speedometer and go from there. It runs along side the center console and the out through the bulk head on the driver's side. Once you get out to that point, the rest is easy. You also need to remove the inside bulk head cover.

THANKS!
Do I have to move/remove dash pieces or do I reach up from the footwell?
I did not need to remove the bulkhead. After disconnecting the cable from speedo, I cut the connector, removed the kick panel & pulled it out from the engine side of the firewall. Reversed the procedure & protected the cable & fitting with tape. Whole thing, less than 45 minutes, depending on severity of analism.
Good luck, I rate it a very easy job.

Just reach up under the dash and unscrew the speedometer cable from the back of the speedometer.

Just reach up under the dash and unscrew the speedometer cable from the back of the speedometer.

THANKS ALL!

Did this last weekend!
Firewall cover removed.
Cut off speedometer end to pull through trans tunnel.

I had a heck of a time trying to feed the new cable through the trans/shifter tunnel...so I just laid it under the edge of the carpet next to the tunnel (covered by the carpet finished edge.
Works like a champ and can NOT be seen.
Done!
