Starter trouble

After an abrupt stop with my lame carter afb carb my car stalled. My tried to restart my car and it would restart. so I tried again and again and again. After the third try I could hear the starter just spinning freely. My neighbor, a for guy had me sit in the car with it in 4th with the clutch engaged. He pushed the car backwards and instructed me to let out the clutch. I heard gear like noise and when I tried to restart the car it worked. My car is in the garage now with a brand new optima and all the starter does is spin. I'm guessing solenoid? Do I need a new starter? I think I have a stock type starter. I want to drive my car while its still dry out so anyones help would be great. IF I DO need a starter, I have a HALL big bore system. WIll I need to remove a header to get to the starter? What size bolts hold it in place? Thanks

Ryan,

Sounds like you have a sticking starter bendix (the starter gear is on a self engaging/disengaging spring mechanism). The rocking the car in gear is the usual parking lot quick fix.

You'll want to drop the starter (Two 9/16" bolts and you should not need to drop the header) and will likely get away with cleaning up the accumulated gunk on the starter drive end with a good solvent and re-installing it.

If you feel safer then a replacement/reconditioned starter should be relatively cheap from your local Auto parts store.

You will have to remove the studs that bolts the original starter as they are not long enough and replace with metric bolts to bolt it up.
The holes in the new starter may need to be opened up a hair as they are somewhat off in placement.
You need to jumper the two electrical connections as this allow you to use the original wire to the starter.
Just did mine last weekend.
