I own a 1973 pantera, I am in the process of rebuilding the steering rack or replacing the steering rack bushing, looking for technical advice I found The Pantera Place after reading the rebuild procedure(best I've seen so far)I was still a little unclear on a couple of things. My car had the twisted boot clamps, original never removed? upon taking the rack apart I found no bushing on the driver side, the passenger side had a steel collar with some sort of packing inside secured with a set screw, which came out with little effort, the original bushing?. What I read said nothing about the original bushing it did mention the new one need to be pounded in unless you got a slightly smaller one. Also instructed to drill through the rack housing for a set screw(which I already have) to secure the new slightly smaller bushing, . Can anybody clear things up,? I sure would like to see a steering rack diagram showing all the parts

I have, I saw that before I found that link it was referring to. http://www.panteraplace.com/ For me it seemed to be more detailed with more pictures (my favorite). But I have yet to see a photo or illustration showing the set screw, bushing or how the tie rod ends are bolted with the peened lock ring, though the link I found did explain how to remove the lock ring.but I still have a couple questions. Only 1 bushing ? And was that steel collar with the packing found the old bushing, if so it was attached with a set screw so why drill for a new one.
FYI: only one bushing, on the passenger side, was used. The drivers side is aligned by a shoe and pressure spring on the rack gear. The stock bushing was a steel cylinder lined with rubber, that was bonded to a thin plastic sleeve. The idea was, the rubber would absorb road shock and the plastic sleeve wouldn't need much lube. Needless to say, this system wore very rapidly. Many were replaced by unskilled mechanics, by driving the new bushing in on top of the old one (there's enough room to do this ONCE, then the next time, all the pieces must be driven out during a total tear-down). Stock boot clamps were twisted coat-hanger wire but there are some decent clamps available from some vendors who also supply bronze bushings. This has been the subject of several articles in past POCA and PI magazines, including photos & sketches.
thanks for the input jack, those were the exact answers I was looking for, and right on for my situation. I got that same information this morning during a phone conversation with a person whom for me anyway has given A1 advice on panteras. It's good to here were seening the same thing .
P.S. Marlin no problem, wasn't being serious,it sounded better in my head than it looked in print.thanks for the info
