how do you have your radiator hoses plumbed. does your top hose go to the water pump or does it come from the thermostat.

I have my lower hose going to the water pump suction. The upper one comes from the swirl tank.

I have the upper one going to the water pump and the lower one coming from the swirl tank. I don't think it matters which way they are.
In my mind I think you are correct. There is not a lot of difference between the 2 pipes in the middle of a 2 pass rad. If it was a normal single pass then you should pull coolant from the bottom like all the rads have done for years.
