I just got my car back from the shop after having extensive work done. It ran hot before I took it in, and when I drove it today it slowly worked its way up to 230 degrees. Driving at 50mph for several minutes didn't help.

When I shut the car off it didn't really hiss, tick, pop or gurgle.

So, does it seem like it is really getting that hot?

It has a new water pump, thermostat, hoses and all the water pipes were replaced. The fans appear to be working, but I don't know how much air they are moving. The air was burped from the system by jacking up the car in the back (and the front, I think).

Since it doesn't cool much when I drive that points to the radiator, doesn't it? Plus, it is the only thing I didn't replace.

I searched the archives and found a million different fixes to problems that I don't quite have. Any input would be appreciated.

One major thing to keep in mind 230 degrees is NOT good for the motor .. its destroys valve seals and other things I rather not go into.

Another thing to keep in mind the overflow tank and expansion tank dont have to ne new ..as long as they are not loaded with sludge and or they look good they are fine.

The key is the radiator ... the water pump will pump .. your on the same plain so there is minumal head pressure .. the thermostat is also a vital part. My car runs at 160 degrees normallt .. I have override switches ... basically for residual heat ( meaning to leave running if we are in traffic or stopped ) I can elave the 2 fans on or if the t stat in the rad fails I can over ride .. other wise be careful .. a warped head and many other complications come from over heating.

Stock gauge. The sending unit has been moved to the block, or the head, or wherever. I have been told "it is in the right place."

I know the stock gauges are inacurate, but the car does get kind of cranky when the temp gets up there. I get a hint of low-end pinging, the motor seems to vibrate a little more (could be my imagination) and when I shut it off it won't restart, it just clicks at the firewall and the starter doesn't try to crank.

Fuel delivery fixed with new electric fuel pump.

Cooling problem better, but not fixed. Changing the second fan later this week. Will tank the radiator if that doesn't fix it.

Clicking problem is tricky. It is clearly caused by the heat, but I want to fix it anyway, not just wait until the cooling issue is fixed.

Working, working, working on it.
