the persistence of trans mount bushings (or not)

My transmission mount bushings seem to be melting. These are the red polyurethane bushings that the car had on it when I got it last fall.

One bushing has squeezed out of the mount like toothpaste- the others are soft to the touch, and gooey red material comes off on your fingers.

I assume this is heat related- is this indicative of some unusual condition with the trans? It seems to operate fine, other than an occasional reluctance to go into third if you don't pull the shifter all the way back in the gate.

What type of bushing should I be using?

Yup, plastic don't do so well next to exhaust pipes.

You need to go back to stock rubber.

It's not exactly close to the exhaust, but who knows? Here's a photo of the melted mount.

That is weird. Wouldn't get that hot there ??
Are you sure it is melting from heat ?? or deteriorating ie chemically ?
I would replace them, but with a different material, oh and don't wash em in sulphiric acid !!

I didnt know they were making bushings from recycled gummi bear. Thats the wierdest thing I seen in a while. I cant even imagine the kind of heat generated by either the exhaust or the transaxle that would still be that hot there.

"gummi bear" is an accurate description. My friend in the next town, who also has a red '72, says his are doing the same thing.

Any recommendations for new bushings? Stock Pantera, or something better?

I would think the stock rubber would be more than adequate there. If you have some extra time and a friend with a laser temp gun I might just check to make sure the trans is not getting too hot. I cant imagine it is but its easy enough to check.

That looks like the results of a chemical reaction. Not from heat. What have you been using to clean or lubricate those with???

Never have cleaned them- the car was pretty clean when I got it (less so now!). Rich Boschert in my local club (PCNC) verified that the polyurethane won't stand up to heat.

WHY it's getting so hot, I have no idea, though I did notice it after a 150-mile drive with some stop-n-go on the way back. Baked polyurethane, anyone?
