IMG_2010I was excited earlier today when the new book from Dalton Watson on Tom Tjaarda arrived in my mailbox. At first glance I believe it will be a more than worthy companion to the  book on De Tomaso that Dalton Watson published a while back. Tom will be missed, but it is a consolation that he is getting the recognition and respect he deserves in such a high quality book.

On more than one occasion I listened as Tom explained that area of the rear quarters was key to his design and modifications of that area were the one thing he really didn’t like to see on his Pantera.

A friend and I had a very casual dinner of fish and chips with Tom on the Monterey wharf on the last evening he was in the States, following the 2016 Monterey car week.

He was a good person. I miss him.

Tom was at one of the Monterey Historics awhile back, and was speaker at a Pantera dinner in the Monterey downtown. Somehow, no one checked to see what his schedule was, so there was a 2-hr hiatus before he was to speak. In his typical, low-key way, Tom told me he found a bar close by and shot pool with a couple of locals to kill some time. They very likely had no idea who he was!
