So ...

There I was in "Princess Auto" looking at a book called "1001 Dream Cars". The book contains ALL of the great cars. It is published and printed in the U.K. and fairly covers marques and models from all over the world.

Included amounst the 1001 dream cars are 20 ULTIMATE DREAM CARS. For your reading pleasure here they are (N.B. order does not reflect rank - it is just a number):

1) Jaguar XK120 coupe (1949-1954)
2) Mercedes 300 SL (1954-1957)
3) Lotus Seven (1957-1972)
4) AC Cobra 427 (1962-1968)
5) Ford GT40 (1964-1969)
6) Lamborghini Miura (1966-1972)
7) Dodge Charger Daytona (1969-1971)
8) DeTomaso Pantera (1971-1993)
9) Lamborghini Countach (1974-1990)
10) Ferrari 288 GTO (1984-1987)
11) Ferrari F40 (1987-1992)
12) Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1 (1989-1995)
13) Honda (Acura for North America) NSX (1990-2005)
14) Cizeta V16T (1991-1994)
15) Dodge Viper (1992-2003)
16) McLaren F1 (1993-1996)
17) Pagani Zonda (1999- )
18) Koenigsegg CC8S (2001- )
19) Ferrari Enzo (2002-2004)
20) Bugatti Veyron (2005- )

Well ... A very impressive list indeed. Hard to argue with any of the author's choices. Each has a write up and a beautiful double page photo. However, much like wine and women, there is a strong qualitative element in the choices. I note that not one Porsche was mentioned.

P.S. For personal reasons, I love the photo of the DeTomaso Pantera: a narrow body car in the classic DeTomaso Orange colour. Also, the Teksid 4.6 DOHC is included (albeit highly modified) amounst the 20 in the Koenigsegg CC8S.

I find it odd that Porsche isn't listed also. Moreover, why is Cizeta mentioned and not Diablo in its stead? I'm no authority and am pleased that DeTomaso is there but c'mon, anyone can make up this list. leave it up to any wannabbe car snob and they think their stuff is legitimate just by name dropping Pagani, Koenigsegg, McLaren, Bugatti and Enzo in the same list. Please...Replace those with Ferrari Daytona, Maserati Bora, Alfa 8c, Bizarrini, Iso and Mangusta and you've got a real list IMO. Personally, I can't stand cars that are the cacophonous product of overzealous NASA rejects pushing the envelope to the point of absurdity. Where is the art, the tradition, the history, the sense of pride?? I can't even stare at these cars for too long out of fear that I might just break out in laughter. A million bucks for What????!!!! Fools and their money I guess. Mangusta = Timeless ecstacy of design. Flame on.
Yup, I bet if we all created our own "Ultimate" lists there would probably only be a handful of cars in common.

My "list" is well over 20 cars but would include (incomplete and not in any particular order) my early Pantera, a Pantera GRP4, Mangusta, Longchamp, Ford GT40 MK1, various Ferrari: 400i, 288 GTO, 365GTB (Daytona), 250 GTL (Lusso), 250 SWB, 512BB, Lamborghini LP400 (clean and tidy as Gandini intended), Miura, Maserati Bora & Ghibli, Aston Martin v8 Vantage (nice daily driver), Acura NSX (need something reliable), Citroen SM (need something to start conversations with), Peugeot 205 Turbo16 WRC, 1969 Camaro RS SS, BMW 3.0 CSL, AC 289 Cobra, Iso Griffo, Monteverdi 375S (for those long drives through southern Europe), and of course a McLaren F1.

To complete my list I would need just a bit more $$ and a LOT more garage space. It is fun to dream however. Following Bohdan's "review", I went out and blew $20 for the book. It is actually a surprisingly thorough compendium of all sorts of sports cars. Many are in fact "Dream" cars, but in truth, more than a few would better be classed as "nightmare" cars. Wink

You guys are such aficionados and obviously very cultured car collectors.

While I do appreciate automotive art, I have no such desires. Good thing, as I have neither the money nor the space to house such a collection.

But the benefit of my cheap date monogamy is that my automotive "jones" is quickly taken care of by going downstairs to the garage - and turning the light on.

I already own ...my ultimate dream car.
