Mark,

I snapped this pick after I was exhausted from undercoating removal.

I had heard that many early cars had steel welded into them when they arrived in the US. What was interesting was it appears that the steel was welded in then they just slapped a bunch of undercoating on. All the areas in my car were painted except the added steel.

The pic is not the best but you can see the steel on the inner frame rail

Nope, just factory beautiful(?) paint.

Is it only the PB cars that have the rails added? My 1826 doesn't seem to have them.

Nice job AJThree. The hard part is done.

The factory recall modification pieces that are welded over the vertical tubes that support the back suspension mounts can be seen in the parts manual on page 16 part number 10670. They look flat in the drawing but in reality they have a rounded shaped to fit over the tube and have a folded tab that wraps around at the bottom.

Another part fits under the front lower A arm mount and can be seen on page 15 part number 10462. My car has all the mods and when I have time and I need to document all of them on Pantera Place. The parts installed came from the de Tomaso factory, are very professionally made and look like they belong on the car. They are not just chunks of metal haphazardly welded on.

Smiler Looks Good!

I'm starting to remove my undercoating on 1597 Friday. Just got back from Harbor Freight with a heat gun and attachments tonight. Mines yellow too.

What solvent are you using to do final cleanup?

I was planning to use Aircraft stripper to get to bare metal, then rust bullit, expoxy primer filler, body Glaze and shoot PPG urethane paint with a hardner.
I wanted to paint motor and trans to body color and polish the fins

My trans is at precision proformance getting rebuilt(now). I'm Planning on Stainless firewall, Inner fenders, and tank covers.
I used lacquer thinner for the final clean-up, but if you're going down to bare-metal you can use anything aggressive. If you find it slow going with the heat gun, and your coating is as brittle as mine was, you may find that using a really thin (spring-steel) scraper will chip it off nicely. On my car that method was much faster because the coating came off clean leaving very little solvent clean-up after.
When I cleaned mine off, I used Kerosine. I not only cleaned the engine bay, but also the inside of the fenders around the suspension and the entire underside of the car. Spent 8 hours with a Kersosine rag laying on my back washing the underside of the floor and frame. Is anyone beginning to figure out how I got the name Crazy Dave?
AJ.. you gotta paint it while its apart. Amazing .. whan I stripped mine 1362..The paint came off with the undercoat because I used aircramt stripper. You may be able to sand prime and repaint over the yellow you have. I pulled the ZF, and got the cluth wet... it froze to the flywheel and I had to pull the ZF again Frowner And replace the clutch assymbly too.
Some people are not painting the "underbody". They are using the stuff that is intended for pick-up truck beds.

It is some type of a poly. It looks better then undercaoting. It can be tinted to match or contrast your paint. It gives you water, chip protection. It also acts as a sound deadener.

It's actually not a bad idea.

For instance you could do the floorpans with satin black and do all the suspension components in gloss.

It would look more like what a factory might do on a "supercar".
SmilerWhat a job!!...Spent 12 hours today with a 1000 degree heat gun - 2 cases of Bud Lite and 4 Black Russians later was able to get 90%
of that S..T off.
Used lacquer Thinner and a bunch of rags to remove the rest.
Now its time for Aircraft Stripper and another 14 hours, 3 cases of bud lite and 5 black russians.

EYE OF THE TIGER!!!!

Your right !Were Crazy...
Even the neighborhood kids thought I was nuts!

In my mind - It worth it. Smiler Smiler Smiler Smiler
