I thought maybe it was from the Qvale Mangusta... but it's not...

https://images.carscoops.com/2...qvale-mangusta-8.jpg

but I did find it... from here: https://petrolicious.com/articles/de-tomaso-mangusta

scroll all the way to the right on the top images...

From looking at the sellers "other items", he should know this one is not the production version... and possibly worth much more...

I only recently noticed that the prototype not only has the exposed gas filler, sunroof, no indent for fingers at the door button and operable rear side vent window...

it also doesn't have the rear deck vents, it's just smooth behind the rear windows. in latter pictures of the same car they're there...

looks like different exhaust too... and backup lights?

there are a few variations on THE prototype, This one is a pusher, note rear valence vents & exhaust, one piece rear bumper, no AC rear vent grille, clear back-up lights,no external filler cap, huge rear tires, no rear script on wings (it is on side of the wing with the Ghia badge), exposed rear wing hinges, center mount antena,no finger pockets in quarter, opening quarter vent windows, opening door vent windows, black trim, linear front side marker.

find link here to what I think is 8MA502. I had tons more pics but cant find them.

http://www.provamo.com/Members.../R8MA502/R8MA502.asp

then look at http://www.provamo.com/Members...1218/Unknown1218.asp which is probably 8MA504 or 8MA506 and you can see the evolution of the first few cars to the model we know

Denis, so darned interesting...Wyss's book "Detomaso Automobiles" shows another prototype, very much like The prototype but with vent screens below the rear glass---(still with external hinges, and not the Fiat 850 tail lights, full rear bumper...Maybe just a re-do of the hatches on the original proto?

And looking closely at what I thought was a shadow, but appears that the Automobile Quarterly and Sports Car graphics car shows the removable roof section---painted body color, not glass---as does the Provamo picture set of "502". Are there any pictures that show the dash (esp, the "10 gauge" layout) in the Sports Graphic?

I see your research that the Red car was sold back to DeTomaso.  Was this the first real Mangusta?
