This object is in the middle of the dash, between the two AC vents. It appears to be factory. What is its purpose? The car is a 72 Pre-L, #2695.

Is it factory or aftermarket? I have not seen it on other Panteras. I searched for it earlier on google but included the word Pantera and essentially got no results.
Interesting that it has a fabric border around it. Does the dash appear to have been re-unpholstered? I'd say aftermarket.
I concur that it is aftermarket. The upholstery is original. They also cut the dash on the right side of the right AC vent to install a stereo. It looks like they thought of the dash as a blank canvas. I am in the process of using fiberglass to put it back to stock.
Steve, I've seen a few GT-5's with an electronic clock in the dash instead of the analogue. Could be the round analogues were getting hard to find in '83-85. So you can maybe mark it as an 'upgrade' instead of a hot-rod add on.
