voltage regulator

Just fried my voltage regulator and some wires this weekend.Know warning,just smoke and smell of burning plastic when riding around Sunday morning.Lucky I was close to home.Has anyone else had this problem before.When I stoped I sprayed the regulator down with water and unhooked battery cable.Let it cool down and rehooked battery cabe then it restarted with no trouble except negitive charging on amp meter.Could my alternator also be damaged?

I'd say your alternator is ok, but the negative reading on
the amp meter shows that you have a current drain in the system!

Current drain? Yo have electricity in Australia? cool.
Make sure the posts on the back of the alternator haven't grounded to the side of the cylinder head, valve cover, etc.
You could have dropped a bolt or metallic object in there unknowingly.
It's really tight in there.

I know there are 2 types of regulaters. One has contacts and is about $20 and the other is solid state and better for more money $40. Get the good one from NAPA

Just a reminder and I don't know if this will help or not ... below the Equator the current drains in a clockwise direction which is opposite direction it drains up here.

The amount of electricity depends
on how fast we can pedal!
We down here don't have those new type generators like you guys.
It's an effort just to keep the lights going...

Thanks guys.I had the points type regulator and its fried on the left side.I installed new alum.radiator and did not install diodes on the radiator fan sensors.Could that be the cause of regulator being fried.Or is it a matter of old regulator just being old and sticking.

The diodes would protect the circuit if the polarities were installed the wrong way around only.
It sounds like the regulator might have seen better days..
I dont think that would have been cause of the radiator fan being installed.

You can get a lot out of the pedal generators DU. We had 600volt units in Vietnam. Curious how a suspect will admit to anything with that much voltage running through them.
The voltage regulators on the Pantera are the same as on the 72 Mustang. They seem to die from age no matter how much or little they are used. Don't take it personally.
