Where is your temp sensor located? Has it been moved to the correct location on the block right below the thermostat? If so, that's pretty high. When I relocated my temp sensor from the coolant tank I put a petcock in the tank which allows me to drain the top half of the cooling system. I can change the temp sensor or water pump with minimal fluid spill, and I don't need to drain the entire system or radiator.
If you still have the stock coolant tanks, remove the plug where the temp sensor was originally mounted. That will drain most of the top half of your cooling system without making a mess at the front of the engine or your interior. Remove and replace your temp sensor. Actually, remove the block plug and install the new temp sensor there!

My temp sensor was mounted on the water pump for a while too. You'll get better more consistent readings from the block location because the water pump mounted sensor sees lots of air bubbles from pump cavitation.

...You Don't have to drain anything!! If You can MOVE FAST!! The Way I Do It! First Lay Down a Couple of Rags underneath the Port(In The Block). Have the New Sender ready AT HAND, unscrew the Old Piece, BUT Hold it in the Port Opening, Bring up the New Piece Right Beside it, Now QUICKLY exchange Places and Start Screwing in the New Sender!! DO NOT HESITATE!! You Might Loose 1/4 Cup of coolant! All caught by the Rags!
It has been recommended NOT to use a Sealer OR Teflon Tape on the Threads, to Maintain a Proper Grounding! But, I Use the T. Tape anyway and have had No Problems.

Before Beginning!! Bleed-Off any Pressure from the System, at the Pressure Tank Cap! And BE SURE to Put the CAP BACK ON Tight, This will keep Coolant from Rushing out Fast!

Don't Make things Overly Complicated!!...
