Quad 2bbl Webers have always been touchy to tune correctly, and are expensive to work on. There are 4 fuel jets & two air jets per barrel (8 barrels) and the cheapest Weber jet is around $4 ea. Since all the circuits are interconnected to a degree, its easy to get lost trying to tune. Finally, Webers went out of production in the '80s so real experts are hard to find & NOS parts are scarce. Typically, owners search until they find someone who knows something about the carbs, have the set adjusted and then never touch them again, which is not how Webers should be used. They change calibration with the weather, the type of gasoline used and the drivers mood.... A dyno run is valuable once a basic setup is found. PLugged upper air-bleeds are fairly common; I found a weed-seed stuck in one of mine once. FWIW, I'd suggest going to weber-lookalike EFI rather than carbs; cost is similar as is power output, mileage is better and tuning, once you understand whats going on, can be done with your laptop computer.
Way to go...............What a pleasure, and since they are EFI u can use a low, cross-over inlet manifold if u want to keep them under the engine cover.-
Tune up, punch in the setting and away u go.....
You can put in any number of other settings,- ie down at the coast, or up in the mountains and then just call them up on the laptop....... Excelent.
A really cheap way to go is to buy secondhand,- (nothing can really break, so milage is not a big concern)- from a Breakers Yard; 2x sets of 2 litre Nissan RSI, inlet manifolds and throttle bodies. These are 48mm and hooked up with a Ellectronic Managment system will work very nicely on a small block V8. U will of course need to adapt the manifolds to the heads of your choice.
Tai, OK, you have my attention!! Give us a bit more info on the Nissan RSI set-up. Is the spaceing of the manifold outlets pretty close to the intake port spacing on the Cleveland heads? Would it just be a matter of welding mounting tabs to the manifolds?
Do you think the engine management system can be programed to run both banks at once, or would you have to run each bank with a seperate "magic box"?
Any experience you have had with this system is of great interest to me.
Thanks, Mooso.
From what I've seen on Panteras, there are two types of 2-bbl weber-style throttle bodies: 'high' (carb-sized) and 'low'-sized. Low ones fit below the decklid while carb-sized ones require your expensive decklid be notched for clearance. There are many designs of EFI intakes: one weber-type has shoved-forward ports so the decklid need not be notched, but no one knows what the twisted ports do for power delivery. Another design of intake is 3 pieces; a bank of 4 intakes bolts to each head intake flange, with a separate tappet cover in the center to prevent oil leaks. A third style (non-weber) EFI intake is made from a 351W truck EFI lower that needs massive port-matching and welding to fit 351C heads & block but once done, works fine. One apparently can have an easy installation, or a (relatively) cheap installation; pick yer poison.
MOOSO. HI, ONLY SPOTED YOUR POSTING NOW.
MY UNDERSTANDING IS THAT THERE ARE SEVERAL ECU / MANAGMENT SYSTEMS USED LOCALLY HERE ALLOWING THE CONTROL OVER THE MOTORS AND GUYS ARE EXTRACTING EXREMELY GOOD BHP AND TORQUE FIGURES. I WILL MAKE SOME INQUIRIES. I HAVE RUN FOR MANY YEARS (9) NOW 4X WEBER IDA'S ON A HALL INLET & HALLS 180 DEGREE HEADER SYSTEM ETC. ON MY VERY ACCURATE GRP.4 REPLICA WITH GREAT FUN AND EXCELLENT RELIABILITY. JUST FINISHED NEW MOTOR WITH ALL THE GOOD BITS I LEFT OUT OR COULD'NT FIND THE FIRST TIME AROUND. ( HAD TO BUY A WHOLE MOTOR TO FINALY GET THE RIGHT 4V CLOSED-CHAMBERED 'QUENCH' HEADS LIKE THEY USED ON THE 6 X FACTORY GRP.4'S.) - HAVE ALSO PLUMBED IN A NEAT 'ACCUSUMP' OIL PRESS. SYSTEM ALONG WITH 10QRT. BAFFLED SUMP & FULL-ON HALON FIRE SUPRESION.- CERAMIC COATED ALL THE 'HOT' BITS AND K&N BIG FILTERS FED COLD AIR BY BIG 'BUNNY-EARED' SIDE SCOOPS.
THE SOUND THIS CAR MAKES IS INDESCRIBABLE. READ JACK'S DISSRIPTION .........HE SAYS ITS ADDICTIVE WELL IT IS. BIG TIME.

SEE NICE COLOR PICS OF MY GRP.4 ON ALAN B'S POSTING : "180 DEGREE HEADERS".

AN EVEN SIMPLER ROUTE TO THE NISSAN RSI (CORROLA- I THINK.) CONVERSION IS THE ONE DEVELOPED HERE IN JOBURG RUNNING A LARGE, SINGLE THROTTLE BODY MOUNTED UP HIGH ON THE INLET.- THEY OFFER HIGHFLOW INJECTORS FROM 400cc TO 700cc. PLUS A PROGRAMABLE EFI. VERY SIMPLE ALL ROUND.

CHECK THEM OUT. SEEM LIKE GOOD VALUE . I'LL ASK AROUND.-CHEERS TAI.

PS HOW YOU GOING WITH YOUR WEBERS DAVE ?
