As usual these numbers need to be questioned.
Most if not all Panteras are sold privately. The actual sales price is private, not public. There is no proof of sale prices on Panteras.
There certainly isn't any documented data that a price guide can be formulated upon.
Anyone who claims there is should as a public service be at least steralized so that they can't spread thier stupidaty further to future generations.
I vote to publically execute them.
Thier only purpose in stating this information as if it were fact is to sell thier book, or price guide or whaterver other piss pittyful publication it is that they are marketing.
Value is in the eye of the beholder. If your eye is cockeyeded then apparently so are your values.

DeTom,

Average Pantera prices hovered around $30K to $40K for a long time. This last year that range has risen to $40K to $50K, perhaps even $45K to $55K. Sales are brisk too, which is partially why the numbers have risen, another factor being that I think a lot of "good" cars are selling.

I corresponded with Mike Mayberry a few months ago, he mentioned he would gladly buy my Pantera back for what I payed for it, which was $40K. Dave Adler the sales king also says prices are up, up, up!

George, you mean "asking prices" don't you? Do you have actual sales data on "all" or "most"? I don't think so. Even if you have data from PI, it hardly represents the entire market.

As a Pantera owner of over twenty years I hope that people would pay more. Actually it's more of a prayer. Not being a number cruncher by profession, I doubt that todays asking prices have even kept pace with inflation.

They certainly haven't even come close to the "industry" at all.

If you read the review comment from Barrett-Jackson about Shelby Cobras being undervalued in relation to other sales, and 427's are expected to fetch $500,000, what is the term for a Pantera at $30,000 or even $50,000 besides pathetic?

The current value is so bad that if you bend the front fender and the door you have to total the car or fix it yourself.

And just incase you haven't noticed it many of the PI Panteras have had thier prices reduced. I did.

It's odd but I seem to get the impression from some of the owners here that they don't want to see the prices go up. I don't understand that.
I can understand it if you want one and don't have one. Everyone wants to get in on the bottom floor.

Let me go with Dorothy, Todo, Strawman, Tinman and Lion to seek out the Wizrd, he'll have the answer.
Hi Doug,

Two guys who sell Panteras for a living have both told me prices are up, that's sale prices, not asking prices.

Frankly, I ignore the Barret Jackson scene, that is most definitly an alternate universe, Barret Jackson prices are not evey day prices. But 427 Cobras have been priced in the stratosphere for a long time, long before Barret Jackson, just represents how highly people think of them, Shelby has done a good job at creating a legend. I have a word for you, MARKETING.

Turns out the wizard is just some bumpkin from Kansas, don't waste your time.

Not now George, I am trying to convince people to sell me their cars for 18,000. That way I can snap up several and hold on to them when the price goes up. Wanna sell me yours for 18???????

Sorry DT. I didn't mean to step on your action.
OK everybody. I will pay youse guys ten cents on the dollar for your Panteras. I know it may be a stupid thing for me to do since edmonds says the price is headed down. But better get out of the Pantera market while you still can. Get rid of your car by selling it to me. It is still wortha couple of thousand to me out of just sentimental value. Hurry up while I still have money left. May not be so generous tommorrow. You don't wanna get stuck with that old gas hog.

I resemble that remark!

I agree that the Barrett-Jackson phenomenon is more of a joke than reality. And it sickens me as a car guy to see that now it's hard as hell to sneak up on any kind of deal without some yokel thinking his 65 Falcon that is stripped to the shell is worth $5500 because some idiot paid $XX,XXX for one at Barrett-Jackson. Parts are even out of sight these days, and I blame that foolishness for it. Check out e-bay, and see how often that circus is mentioned in old car auctions there.

Hey CJJ, my mother was born south of you, off the 44, in Blanchard OK. Her family moved to Bakersfield, CA during the depression. I'm 1/2 Okie myself, which is why I'm so likable! Ha, ha, ha .......

Interesting story, when they arrived in Bakersfield, my mothers family settled in one of the tent cities, like so many that had sprung up around the nation at the time. (The tent cities were called "Hoover-villes" due to the fondness everyone had for the president) The feller living in the tent next to hers was also a fresh arrival from Oklahoma, some guitar toting cowboy named Roy Rogers.

So my bumpkin friend, I'm a bumpkin myself.

At 7% prices double every 10 years, so an $11000 74 Pantera would be worth ~$88000.

Of course stock market returns over that period have actually been above 10% which double every 7 years, making that same Pantera worth ~$176000.

IMHO, prices stayed in a range of $20-$25000 for a very long time, since the car market bubble broke in the late 80's until about 2000. Then prices went to moved up to the $20-$30000 range and in the last year they have started to climb to the $30-$40000 range and more for a good restoration.

Pantera Profiles had a story that documented sales in the 84-86 timeframe. Average prices fell in the $15-$20000 range.

Based on the 10% return noted above, I could have retired by now if I hadn't "invested" in my Pantera. I don't know whether I should laugh of cry!!!

I'm actually a transplant - when I said a "bumpkin from Kansas", I wasn't kidding. Born and raised in North Central KS. Now my wife - there's an Okie; we go back and forth quite a bit. I give her no end of grief about Okies and some of their ways. Now back to Pantera pricing.....

Pics of the webers and exhausts are in "my pics".
Those are the only ones I have at the moment.
I would consider installing the "engine roll bar" and pulling the engine and fuel tank to do it if I can find who has it. I'm sorry I didn't do it when I had the drive train out. It might have been budgetary.

I'll see if I can scan the engine roll bar pic from Halls catalog and post it.
Before I bought my Pantera (which has almost been a year now) I watched prices for quite some time. From 2003 to mid 2004, the cars jumped an average of five to six thousand dollars. In many cases by 2005, quite a number of cars were in the 35 to 40k range, and even higher for pristine samples. My feeling now is you can get whatever the market will bear. I hate to say it, but thirty or forty grand isn't what it use to be. As inflation enters into our present economy, the dollar shrinks, and it takes more of them to buy goods, services and classic cars! Don't EVER give your Pantera away for the price of an average new car. A Detomaso is a gem waiting to be discovered by the general public.
