With the key turned on but not running, what should the positive side of the coil read? I get 5vdc. Is that correct? Sounds wrong to me but I am an amateur.
Also can I run a wire from the positive post of the battery to the + side of the coil to see if its working right? I am think I have low voltage and trying to troubleshoot a few things.
I got some great advice yesterday and trying to go though the 20 things I need to do.

When starting it should read 9v. When running 6v.
If that is a bench test setup (which I applaud if you are troubleshooting), all the components (Duraspark box and distributor) should tie into the negative with a solid grounding jumper.

You will burn your coil up by connecting a hot lead from the battery to it. it must be a switched source of voltage. Do you still have a points distributor? Is the ballast resistor still installed?
He is running a Duraspark distributor and still has the ballast resistor

Spark looked good (to me) which is a surprise since I was almost sure thats what the issue was. Weird that when i pour gas in the carb I get the same condition, chug chug chug idle with no rev ability.
I did witness gas squirting into the carb from the nozzles when its pumped.

Check your meter batteries
I put in all new batteries and it still shows the battery box and the screen flashes between 2 different images. I think I need to stop touching stuff Larry.
Can it still be the coil and the spark does not get enough voltage? Silly question without a meter?
For some reason the ignition switch feels better. I think the marbles fell out.

It appears you have your meter set to resistance rather than volts.
