FWIW, I've never seen a true dash-1 ZF in a Pantera. Instead, what Lloyd Butfoy calls a "dash 1-1/2" ZF is a Pantera type (dash-2) upside-down-cast differential case with a Mangusta type (dash-1) transmission bolted on, with a Pantera end cap. These were normally found only in the earliest pushbutton Panteras, and if a Mangusta ring & pinion was also in the differential, the car was capable of enormous acceleration but topped out at about 130 mph. These composite ZFs were recalled by Ford very early in the mfg process due to engine failures from over-revving and ZF cracking, and replaced with a std dash-2 ZF, which (I think) added two allen bolts into the backside of the bellhousing, making the dash-2 ZF stronger as well. At the same rpms, the later ZF ring & pinion was capable of around 160 mph. Visually, very early ZF bellhousings were rough sand-cast with 2 small inspection/vent holes as Mike said; all late bellhousings were smooth die-cast with one inspection/ventillation hole. But at the price of ZFs since '71 (now around $6000 for a rebuildable core & $11,000 for a completely gone-thru ZF!), I wouldn't be too surprised to find about anything in a Pantera.

Are you referring to the wheel well "dropping" down (lower left corner of photo)? I think that mine is the same, but I won't be able to check for a few days. Please widen the pic and mark the area if you can.

Yea, this pic here. I thought that was the case:

This old car needs everything re-done. I am looking forward to getting started on it but I still have a lot of work to do on 1905 yet. I vow to only restore one car at a time.

If your in So California you are in a good area for Pantera's. I get to Santa Anna a bit and there are a lot of Pantera vendors and people there. A Pantera barge must have run aground in So Cal years ago!
My car is completed as far as I think I will take it. I have owned it for about 5 years I guess. It started as an unmolested early car, it still has about half of the original paint sticker that was located up by the radiator. I pulled the engine and trans. Had the trans completely rebuilt, scraped the original undercoating and painted the engine bay. My work does not even compare to the quality of yours!!! The engine was completely rebuilt. 393 stroker, original quench heads, Holley 770, and original pantera headers and mufflers. It really is a nice car. The goal was to make the most HP while trying to retain the stock appearance. I am running the original air cleaner! I will post some pics of the car in the appropriate section on forum.

For what its worth....

I had my zf rebuilt last year by Dennis at Pantera Performance Center in Co. Total cost with shipping was $5k. He did a fantastic job and it came back with a 7 page detailed invoice of what was involved in the rebuild.

My car is a 72 Euro Pushbutton and came with a dash 2 ZF.....Now here is the important part....
Dennis said it was a good thing I did not have the dash 1 ZF becuase you can't get replacement parts for it. My Dad mentioned to him that he was looking for another Pantera to restore and Dennis told him to stay away from any car with a Dash 1 zf..... Just passing on the info that was told to us.....

Maybe someone that knows Butfoy can find out more about the availabilty of the early ZF parts????
