I went to my local Kragen/O'Reilly today to get a new tool for the ZF drain and filler plugs (can't find my old one). The tool aisle was mostly empty but I did find the tool. The price on the rack was $4.99, but it rang up at the register as $2.49. I didn't ask, but it appears that they may be clearing out their tools.

When this post first came out I went to my local O'Reilly but they did not have this drain plug tool in stock. I asked if they could order it but they said it was discontinued by the supplier.

That was no big deal because I ended up making my own drain plug tool like EA #3538 did in this post: Home-made ZF Drain Plug Tool

Interestingly, I was at my local Harbor Freight the other day and needed a 6mm hex head socket for my Pantera project. I went ahead and purchased this set for $10.40 (after my 20% coupon – which you can find in almost any magazine). When I arrived home and looked closer at the set I noticed that there was a 17mm hex head socket in the set which is exactly the right size for the ZF drain plug.

So if your looking for a ZF drain plug tool and need some other metric hex head sockets the price really can’t be beat.

O'Reilly, formerly Checkers here, no longer carry Powerbuilt sockets/wrenches/tools. Several months ago, they were having a 50% off sale to clear out the product line. They may carry some but they have switched over to GM GOODWRENCH sockets/tools. At 50% off, I bought all four on their shelf as I always tend to misplace mine when I need it. I'm sure your local VW Bug shop will carry that 17MM drain tool.
