Is is possible to check the level of the oil without dumping and refilling. I know the level cap is probably wrong as the ZF is upside down. I did a search for "oil level" in the forums but didnt turn up anything positive.

I filled mine after complete rebuild with 3.75 quarts of 80/90 wt. as recommended by RBT
It just started to overflow the filler as I was done. So I think you would be fine just filling up to the fill plug.
Make sure you give the oil lots of time to fill there is only about 4 small holes that let oil go from the ring and pinion side where the fill plug is to the transmission side of the transaxle

Thanks for the info. The transaxle was rebuilt a while back and never used. It had a tag on it from Pantera Performance saying it was filled but figured I would check. The last thing I need right now is a hosed gearbox.
Always better safe than sorry! The ZF is not exactly cheap to rebuild or replace.
