I've replaced the top of my engine and one of the modifications I've made is an MSD distributor. As a result I can't use my 13" K&N that I've been using as well as my engine cover. I'm going to have to get either a 10" or 9" or what ever the smaller diameter aircleaner is or get one of the dog bone aircleaners that I've seen on other cars. Does any one here have any insight over which they prefer? I'm also interested in the covers for the engine that have a taller center section so you can run a tall aircleaner. Does anyone have anything to say about those? I saw one on Evil Bay about a month ago but I remember someone on this board said that they were still available somewhere. Does anybody know who or where that is? Thanks Vince 6909

Hey Vince, regarding the air cleaner, I would stay away from the "dogbone". I had one. Looks cool, but is somewhat restrictive. I sold mine on eBay and bought an Edelbrock Elite cast aluminum (top) oval model with a 2" K&N filter from Summit Racing for $115. Works really well, looks classy. Plus, even with a 1/2" phenolic carb spacer on my Edelbrock Performer 4V, the top of the air cleaner is dead even height to my deck lid. You can go to a 3" or 4" if you don't mind blocking the rear view. I do not have the center portion of my engine cover. As far as the "higher" engine cover is concerned, Kirk Evans of AmeriSport Industries is the man to talk to. Email him at kre@adelphia.net. Kirk makes all kinds of cool fiberglass components for the Pantera.
Funny you should mention that. The Edelbrock is what's on there now. I'm sure it's fine. I just didn't like looking in the rear view mirror and seeing an aircleaner. I might look in some of the Hot Rodding magazines. I know some of the guys who make street rods have some very cool oval or triangular shaped aircleaners. My ultimate goal here is to use somethings that works, doesn't look goofy and be able to put the cover back over the engine. I might not be able to do all of those things. I'll email Kirk in the morning and see what he has or knows. Thanks for the assist. Vince
Just to add some fuel to the fire, I had always heard that those "dogbone" air cleaners were restrictive as well. However, John Taphorn, current POCA president, did some "mythbusting" on the dyno. I wish I could remember his exact results, because I'd hate to mis quote him, but I think he found that air cleaner only cost him 2 hp or something like that. I think that it was within a hp or two of a round K&N, or something like that.

I remember the results if not the details - the dogbone was not nearly as restrictive as people thought.
Does any one know where I can find a picture of one of these dog bone air cleaners mounted on a Pantera engine? If that's the way I'm going to have to go I'd like to see one first. Are there 2 different kinds? Is one made by B&M and another made by Holley or is one of them out of production? Vince
