I have just received the shipment with "from me to me" Christmas gifts.
All of them arranged by Hall Pantera.
Looks great !! Wonder how Santa knew ?

However I am wondering about the collector size of the big bore headers.
As my new engine is a stroker ( 393 cu. inch), with alu CHI 3V heads, will the big bore headers be restrictive, and reduce the output ?
Collector is about 1,9 inch inner diameter, and the tubes are about 1,7 inch in outer diameter.

Any thoughts guys ?

Best regards

Frode,

The collector of the Big bore headers were made to mate with the oem Pantera tail pipes, this is way too small for even a 351 cubic inch motor. The performance of the header was compromised because the design goal was to have a header that integrated with the oem exhaust system.

You want at least 1 7/8" (1.875") OD tubing collecting into at least 2 3/4" (2.750") tubing for even a 351 cubic inch motor. I know PPC manufactures headers with those dimesnions for the Pantera.

2" tubing collecting into 3" tubing would not be too big for your stroker motor. But I'm not aware if that is available.

Tail pipes between collectors and mufflers will need to be 2 1/2" at a minimum, 2 3/4" or 3" would not be too big. No need to use tubing bigger than the collector however.

The Ansa mufflers will most likely be too restrictive as well. Something like the new mufflers sold by PI will be in order, I think the PI mufflers are Magneflow brand.

Frode,

There are 2 PPCs! Pantera Performance Center of Colorado, and Pantera Parts Connection of Reno Nevada. Pantera Parts Connection (Larry Stock's business) has the headers I referred to previously.

There are links on the PI home page and the POCA web site to most of the Pantera vendors. I suggest you give each vendor a phone call and inquire as to what they offer in the way of headers, because I do not know what all is available myself. Hall Pantera, Pantera Proformance, PI Motorsports, Pantera Performance Center, Panteras by Wilkinson, Pantera East; they all deserve a call.

Stock headers have tubes meausring 1 11/16" OD or 1 13/16" OD, depending upon where you take the measurement. The oem headers on my '74 L look like those in the picture below.

Gosh. My headers don't look nothing like that. They come down from the block and like curl all around each other into a big mother tube. It is like coffe can diameter, at least it seems that way when you are under the car looking up at them. And then my muffler is like two giant glass packs, side by side withe seperate resonator tubes comming out of them. When I do my tech article this winter I will take pictures of them for ya.
When I bought my heads from CHI (I have the 218cc versions) John told me go with 2 inch header primary tubes and 3" for collectors and mufflers. Smaller would be restrictive. The Pantera has its fitment limits and off the shelf headers fitting that dimension dont exist (or didnt a few years ago). Your stock muffs wont work well at all. I'm not saying you cant drive it that way, its just you wont get the maximum potential results. PPC headers or PI headers are close without going custom made. Send the Hall units back. I sold my Halls and got PI big throat. They work pretty good. (No Dyno numbers)

Thanks George. I have bought all my stuff from hall because when I bought the car the guy had Hall Pantera catalogs with the car. I have always thought it was pretty good stuff, and he must have too.

I know this is off subject, but are you thinking of marrying Nora??

Marriage? That's an eight letter word, twice as bad as a four letter word. No thoughts of marriage with Nora.

By the way, Nora said Dennis was sweet, and if he were here, she'd give him a big kiss. Too bad Dennis.
