I'm a memeber of many cars clubs in Calif ( including PIAC) and have been active in fighting smog laws directed at our classic cars.A new law called AB-32 is intended to make Calif a leader in reducing green house gases, unfortunately the leaders of CARB ( calif air resoureces board) and BAR ( bureau of auto repair) are being led by extreme environmental idealogues that are hell bent on making a world wide statement, in what is really a global issue. In addition to raising energy costs and driving businesses out of Calif, they are also targeting older cars (and they don't see the difference between a well maintained classic, that is driven usually less than 2,000 miles a year, with an older, poorly maintained clunker)Unfortunately, what those of us that have been dealing with and fighting archaic auto related auto laws, have just realized how bad it may get. Those of us that own Panteras and other classics and hot rods, had better beware and become more involved. Her is what we just found out:

More and more I wonder exactly WHO these elected officials are working for. I keep seeing more speed traps, more nonsense tickets and more nonsense legislation. I know it is a LOT worse in some other parts of the world than here in North America, but wouldn't it be nice to not always be trying to make everything more complicated?

I think we all need to start getting good at letter-writing because otherwise how will our legislators know they are not representing our views. I'm pretty sure the clean air people are pretty good at writing letters on "our" behalf.

Over half this nonsense you describe comes NOT from elected CA officials but from anonymous, faceless APPOINTED bureaucrats that are accountable to no one except their equally anonymous bosses. You the public have absolutely no say in their performance, pay or competence. Welcome to La-La-Land...

Been here for a while and can't say I'm lovin' it.

Of course, you are right, but much of the nonsense ticketing and enforcement priorities are based on the equally nonsensical legislation which is often driven by small, vocal special-interest groups. At least they are here in my part of La-La- Land.

Mexafornia has got to make a buck some how!
I moved out in 93 but had to come back in 99 to take care of family business. Its time I move out for good! Been laid off for the third time in four years because of the Crappy economy. I don't see it getting any better soon. I don't care what Pres. B.O. says! Like Jack said we need to find out who is pulling the strings and do away with ALL of them!
OK I off my soap box! Out to the garage to work on the Pantera, getting ready for Reno!
There's nothing wrong with clean air. I like breathing it.

The negative part is when the environmental groups don't get their way, they find a back door to get around any legislature that was hammered out in good will in a public forum. Representative government be damned, the environmental lobby know whats best for all of us. Yes that is very wrong, but it happens several times a year in states throughout the US, not just California. Its not just clean air that is an issue, access to open public land is constantly under attack too. Save the trees from the people, not for the people.

No matter what happens ... we will cope. The entire state of California does not do smog testing now, only those communities in the bay area and greater southern California, like Carlsbad and Ventura. So where is your car registered? Maybe you need a a postal mail box in Ridgecrest so your car can be registered there. That's a solution a lot of owners use now so they can hot rod newer cars. There will always be smog station operators who cooperate with hot rodders, you just gotta ask around to find them. Its best if you "know somebody" if you get my drift. There's a guy here in Ventura who kinda forgets to do the visual inspection so long as your car passes the tail pipe test. And getting an engine to pass the tailpipe test isn't that hard, just need lean calibrated carburetors and cams with 60 degrees or less overlap.

Hang onto to your Autolite carbs, EGR plates & Ford air cleaners, if the testing becomes a reality the value of those things will escalate.
