Our local newspaper just completed this big report on how dangerous drivers and cyclists are to pedestrians. It’s a continuing saga worldwide as cities and governments everywhere try to force drivers, cyclists and even pedestrians to slow down and follow rules. It’s freaking me out.

The lead story here was “Cars vs bikes vs pedestrians. Why can’t we all get along?” Here is the response I sent to the editor.

_________

The question should be – “Why can’t we remain individuals and still get along?”

On a recent trip to Toronto, I was walking along busy Bloor Street noticing how the pedestrian sidewalk traffic was like any Ontario street. No passing, no changing lanes, no attention to anyone around you. Just follow the person in front of you and do what they do.

My efforts to walk around slower walkers, was treated with immediate surprise and disdain. As I walked into the street to find some room to move, or cross to the less busy other side of the street, cars screeched to halt and drivers honked and yelled. My goodness, I’ve grown up in Montreal and can easily negotiate myself across a busy street without putting myself or anyone else at risk.

This recent review and discussion of street behavior brings to a head the real problem in our society. We are being forced to be the same. Drivers, cyclists, pedestrians must all follow the rules of the slowest, least motivated, most unsure and fearful lambs in front of us. We must watch the same televisions shows, eat the same food and do the same things.

Marketers and government would find it a lot easier to appeal to a single trained populace – one without differing needs and attitudes. But what society must do is learn to respect the individual rights of all. And so, like with many other rights that have a potential to endanger ourselves or others, there are regulations. And these regulations should be based on testing to determine ability. Our driving or cycling tests should determine such things as who can drive at night, beyond what speeds and in which lanes. You think you can talk on a cell phone and still pay attention? Prove it. Think you can negotiate your bike through a busy pedestrian intersection. Prove it. Think you can drive in ridiculous rush traffic hour without getting excited? Prove it.

No this isn’t crazy. Our licenses currently indicate what vehicles we can drive or if we have to wear corrective eyewear. So drivers and cyclists will just have another indicator - an A, B or C license. We all have had to pass tests to prove where and when we can do those things we may think we are capable of doing.

It’s time to stand up for individual rights, or we will all end up as bunch of robots, programmed to the lowest common denominator.

...I feel Your Pain David! Here's My take on the subject. Here in California the 'Drivers Code book' states Clearly: 'Driving is NOT a Right, it is a Privilege, Revocable at ANY Time!!' So let's start revocing Licenses! I,ve said so many times, I'am turning blue stating it, that 'The State of California will give any Clown/Idiot a License to Drive just a long as they have the Money to pay for it! It's always about the Money! All the rest Don't even care about a License to drive! Motorcycle? Who Needs a License; is the mentality. Automobile Insurance?? Fugetaboutit!! I get fed-up, on the 'Freeway'; (Free for now, just wait), with these 'Tree-Loving', Moron Drivers who Block the lanes and slow traffic down, refuse to move over; thinking they are Helping the Planet Earth! When all they are doing is spreading More smog over a Smaller Area! My solution? Drive a Tank!! LOL...
when ever I start ranting about dumb a$$ drivers (which is often) I wonder what they do for a living??.. How they apply themselves in their work place and then on the roadway??... When a traffic light turns green, half the cars accelerate away and the other dumb a$$e$ just roll along, hands in the 10-2 position, while the cars in front drive away and the cars in back stack up... Just pathetic man!... I was so angry at two cars going 43mph in a 55, I finally rolled up next to a guy about 50 years old and said... "sir, you realize you can block the road while your moving right"... His head tilted like the RCA dog... 50 years old man!!... I wonder what he does for a living??...

Half of the time I come across slow moving vehicles blocking traffic, they are elderly. They obviously drive slower because their reaction and response time is slower, but they are creating a hazard all the while.

I won't even get into all the illegal immigrants in CA learning how to drive without insurance. Just give me one day with a tank, I'll call it natural selection.
It's everywhere. I'm lucky I live in a small town and know the slow pokes. I dread getting behind Benny. I looked for the mirrored windshield decal that says "slower traffic keep right" But I figured I would just be askin' for it. I got so pissed once I passed a tractor following a flatbed behind a schoolbus. By the time I got past that they were all following a cop car trying to turn left. That cost me. I told the cop I was from NC farm country and we always passed tractors on a double yellow. I pled guilty.
When a was a kid, my parents educate me to be carefull about traffic , cars and roads...At that time the roads were for cars. In our ¨modern¨ time, the car drivers are responsible for pedestrians, cyclists, small ¨scooters¨ that get hardly 50km maximum and shortly (in Québec province) very little economic car that will slowdown traffic even more.If we, as car driver, hurt somebody, we are automatically suspect as responsible for the incident...Dam...who pay for these roads and for wich reasons they were built?

At least (for now) it isn't like the UK where they started testing police cars in April with cameras mounted on a pole (like the Google Street-View cars) to catch people not wearing seat belts, or who aren't paying sufficient attention to their driving - cell-phone users, people eating or putting on makeup etc ...

Admittedly, I don't particularly like watching SUVs drifting into my lane while the driver gabs on the phone, but there has to be something better than filming people and then having someone review the footage and send out tickets weeks or months later.

Big Brother Cams

Of course in certain parts of North America they wouldn't be able to use 'Smart' cars, they'd have to go around in armour plated Suburbans or H1s.
Here's some other shots with the periscope at different levels ...

Not really a bad idea putting a mast on a smart car, add a red flag or a blinking light and then the SUVs will at least know where the little things are and not be as likely to trod on them.

Of course, you don't want to be using it right after a football (soccer) match if the fans are in a bad mood...

OK .. I guess I was wrong again.. jeez what a huge camera. On a brighter note.. we had a case in the Greenville county where a county administator used spyware to track and see emails sent by employees. He was convicted and got a year and a day prison. The court said any info he got would have been inadmissble in any court. The administator claimed it was his job to know what goes on.... Who said? " You don't have any privacy, get over it"
Just wanted to let you know that we are not alone.

Our big daily newspaper actually published my letter to the editor. For the next few days the paper was packed with drivers giving hell to those who waste our tax dollars on these stupid ideas that are invading our freedoms and are designed to dumb us down and continue to make traffic even worse!

Get in your cat and go blast through traffics and wake up those sleepy drivers with some noise. Its time to remind yourself why we like these cars in the first place.

You go Dave ! I agree .. they think your a freak if you dont do what they do and think out of the box ... our countries were built by rebels.
