Does Lay-down Rad require fan bracket removal?

My fluidyne lay-down was about 1/8" from the brackets. I took them about because I was afraid they would touch going over rough roads (which the car will never see anyway). I also didnt like seeing the brackets thru the grill.

The fan brackets are spot-welded on. In order to remove them, you will need access through the front opening and that means removing the screen/grill. If you are going to use the Ron Davis radiatior with the intergrated rear shroud and fan, you will never go back once the conversion is done. So I say do it but you decide since, once you do it, its a pain if you want to reverse the process. If you don't remove the bracket, the clearance is going to be pretty close when laying the radiator forward.

Thanks for the good advice. That's exactly where I was coming from...what if I ever want to reverse the process? Once I get my new rubber grommets, I'll drop in the radiator to check the clearance. I'll probably end up cutting out the brackets in the interest of getting the most benefit out of my conversion.

One final advice ..... put a piece of cardboard to cover the fins when you do the trial fitting. You will thank me later

Dennis, I talked to Gerry a "PI Motorsports" a couple years back about the laydown conversion and asked what his take was on this, He told me he spends alot of time with laydown converted Pantera's converting back to the original configueration because the cars out here overheat! I took his advise and used a fluidyne in the up right cofigueration with flexlight pullers and the Meriah fans as pushers;

I am sorry to say I am one of those people that ended up putting my radiator back to the stock position. My setup uses a Fluidyne core with Permacool fans. The Permacool shroudless fans are over 3000CFM EACH(6000CFM total) but they don't tell you the minimum distance required from the back wall. With the laydown kit, the sloped wall behind the radiator became parallel to my fan blades. The reflected air fought the incoming air so my setup was very inefficient, even at highway speeds.
My friend has aluminum radiator with sucker fans, I think its a PIM set up, setup in the laydown position and his system works excellent. I think his fans have a total output less than half of mine but the fans have a built in shroud which may have helped with smoothing the flow to push the air out under the car, even in the laydown position. Go figure. BTW, he doesn't have hood vents.

My suggestion is to try out your new system without removing your stock brackets unless there is a clearance issue. Remove it later once you've run some real world test to your setup. Like I said before, one you cut your front brackets, it's a pain to put them back. I've never put mine back.
