I recently put new plugs in my 1972 Pantera and inadvertantly got two wires on one bank crossed. But it took me awhile to figure out what happened. In the meantinme the engine developed a knock on the cylander bank that was misfireing. It doesn't do it when there is no load on the engine but as soon as the car is in gear and going it starts to knock or clatter. What on earth could this possible be?? It has done it ever since. Any ideas???

How long were you running the car with the wires cross connected? Did you drive the car in this state for extended durations? You might be able to isolate the problem to a specific cylinder by pulling individual plug wires one at a time until you find which cylinder is making the noise.

Did you replace the plugs with one of proper heat range? Did you damage a plug? What is the condition of the plug wires if damaged or old they could be cross firing two cylinders.
Deto...You might wanna 2x check the wires, especially ones in the firing order adjacent to each other (like #5 and #6). Reason I say this is because I had a similar issue on another project, swore up-and-down the order was correct, checked 2x before...........and sure enough thats what it was. In fact it didnt make a noise until about 2000rpm. Sounded like a hollow knock of sorts.

...Rod Bearing couldn't take it and let loose! It happened to me; when the distributor gear pin sheared and I lost oil pressure. (after the pin was replaced and I had been driving it for a few hours), 'it' Started as a 'whisper' of a tick, and by the time I pulled her back into the garage for the last time; it sounded like a sledge hammer on an anvil! Now, the engine is pulled, and an all new Boss 351 is waiting to go back in...
