Exhaust Header Leak

I am experiencing a popping and backfiring on deceleration, and what feels like misfiring on acceleration. Would a leak at the header to the head (which I have) cause this?

Also, anybody use Hi Temp JB Weld for a fix? The gaskets are new, and I can see that the header does not mate up perfectly, so changing them out may not fix.

I had the same problem, and it turned out to be a torn intake manifold gasket. How is your oil consumption? Do you have oil fouled plugs?

For the exhaust gaskets, try Remflex gaskets. They are made of a compressible material that absolutely seals.

My first thought regarding the deceleration back firing & acceleration mis-firing you have described is that it sounds like a lean fuel/air mixture. The header leak wouldn't be responsible. My current favorite trick to seal headers is to double-up or triple-up on copper exhaust gaskets.

I should also add it's on the #1 cylinder, and when I try and set the timing, 16 degrees, I can do it, but then the mark will jump forward every second or so. Gotta be it. Will know after JB sets up.

JB Weld worked. No backfiring. Smooth acceleration. Just shows what an exhaust leak in the wrong place can do. I've read good things about JB Weld, so for a fix like this it beats tearing off the whole header AGAIN.
