Good Afternoon,

I'm embarrassed to ask but I made the mistake of not installing the fuel pump on the new engine before installing it.  I also had installed the cooling tubes and hoses, so that had to be removed.

I've spent hours on this and can't figure it out.  The main issue is I can't get a the wrench on the bottom bolt.  I bought a Robb C fuel pump which I've had to separate to make it fit.  I'm going to try and again with the OEM fuel pump and see if I have any luck.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I have replaced the fuel pump several times in the cars.  It can be done.  An important step is to make sure the fuel pump eccentric is at its low point.  This exerts the least amount of pressure on the fuel pump arm.  Simply rotate the engine by hand until the fuel pump mates to the bolt with least amount of force.  Also make sure engine assembly lube is on the fuel pump arm at the contact point.  The bottom bolt should turn on by hand and mostly seat.  I can't remember exactly how to get the wrench in place to torque the bolt.  I have done it with the cooling tubes in place.

Gentlemen thank you for the information.  I forgot to mention this is a new engine that hasn't been fired yet, so everything is set to 0* TDC.  I guess as long as my timing is close, I can rotate the crank over to release the cam tension on the pump arm.  The engine has a flat tappet cam, so I have to run it at 2000 RPM for the first 20 minutes.  Just trying not screw anything up.

Maybe a customized wrench would help with the bottom bolt.  I seem to recall something like this (with an extra bend) would allow access from the front hatch.  You pretty need an acetylene torch to make the bends.  I will be making one shortly to tighten the the nut on the trunnion for the shift linkage since it is almost impossible to get a wrench in there.
