Fuel Pump Installation

I have replaced the fuel pump several times in the cars.  It can be done.  An important step is to make sure the fuel pump eccentric is at its low point.  This exerts the least amount of pressure on the fuel pump arm.  Simply rotate the engine by hand until the fuel pump mates to the bolt with least amount of force.  Also make sure engine assembly lube is on the fuel pump arm at the contact point.  The bottom bolt should turn on by hand and mostly seat.  I can't remember exactly how to get the wrench in place to torque the bolt.  I have done it with the cooling tubes in place.

I think that low point is at, or 180* off TDC.

Gentlemen thank you for the information.  I forgot to mention this is a new engine that hasn't been fired yet, so everything is set to 0* TDC.  I guess as long as my timing is close, I can rotate the crank over to release the cam tension on the pump arm.  The engine has a flat tappet cam, so I have to run it at 2000 RPM for the first 20 minutes.  Just trying not screw anything up.

Make sure you’re using break-in oil for your initial run. Driven Oils makes a good one that’s designed for flat tappet cams.

Good Advice on the break-in oil.  The engine builder recommended the same.

Maybe a customized wrench would help with the bottom bolt.  I seem to recall something like this (with an extra bend) would allow access from the front hatch.  You pretty need an acetylene torch to make the bends.  I will be making one shortly to tighten the the nut on the trunnion for the shift linkage since it is almost impossible to get a wrench in there.

I think you are right on the wrench.  I bought an extra-long wrench and was able to get the bottom nut tightened from the bottom of the car.  I'm hoping it is tight enough since I can only make small rotations due to limited access.
