I am in the final stages of rebuilding an 81 GT5. It's cost me an arm and a leg. (But I can and will still drive it)
Got the ZF back today from the painter and polisher. Looked great from the outside.
I laboed over the idea of taking the bottom plate off and checking to see if it had been safety wired. Didn't want to do it after paying some one as much as I did to make it pretty.
Did it anyway. I found that one of the ring gear bolts had been shaved off. Found the major piece in the bottom of the pan. Haven't found the head yet, but will before anything goes anywhere. Many of the other bolts were loose. No safety wires.
It gets torqed and saftey wired. I got lucky, everything else is in pefect shape otherwise. Fluid was even still not burnt.
THIS BOARD and a 60.00 fix just saved me thousands of dollars.
Thank you, one and all !
Your experinece and wisdon cannot be replaced. It's great that so many are willing to share it with the rest of us.
Thanks.

You dodged the bullet, my friend! Congratulations- FYI, using a 'crowfoot' socket adapter makes torquing the ring gear bolts inside the cases pretty easy. I forget the size but a metric crowfoot is not necessary- there's an SAE equivalent that will work.
